TWO STARS
Carter Gilmore – 2020 – F – Arrowhead
The junior forward messed around and had a triple-double. Gilmore finished with 15 points, 13 assists, and 11 rebounds, torching the West zone with his passing ability. Gilmore contributed to a large of number of Arrowhead’s 3-pointers, kicking out to open shooters from the high post or floating passes across the top of the zone. A skilled, versatile combo forward, Gilmore can take over as a scorer when needed. He’s very good on the perimeter as a dribble penetrator and absorbs contact well against bigger defenders. A better athlete than people think, Gilmore
had two dunks in the second half that helped put the finishing touches on the win. Gilmore currently has offers from Brown, Southern Illinois, UW-Milwaukee, DePaul, and Illinois Chicago. The Panthers and Loyola (IL) were both present Tuesday night.
Tyler Gouin – 2019 – PG – Arrowhead
We saw Gouin play very well in the season opener against Milwaukee King. It’s now safe to say that his performance at the Fresh Coast Classic was not a fluke. Gouin dropped 30 points to pace Arrowhead in their 28-point victory. Gouin was sensational from all three levels, killing the zone with his 3-point shooting, pulling up from mid-range, and getting all the way to the basket in transition before the defense could set up shot. A shifty, crafty ball handler, Gouin does an excellent job of controlling the flow of the game. His change of pace/direction is very difficult for defenders to stay in front of. A guy that wasn’t on our radar coming into the 2018-19 season, Gouin would be a terrific pickup at the Division 3 level, particularly in the WIAC.
TWO STANDOUTS
Cameron Palesse – 2021 – G – Waukesha West
Palesse had a strong second half even though the Wolverines are were denied any sort of a comeback opportunity. The sophomore guard finished with 15 points and shot the ball well from 3-point and mid-range. Palesse continues to improve his outside stroke, which sets up the best part of his game, slashing to the bucket. Palesse has excellent body control around the rim and a knack for generating 3-point play opportunities. He’ll deliver body shots to defenders, draw contact, and finish despite falling to the ground. Wisconsin, Valparaiso, LIU-Brooklyn, Portland, and Southern Illinois are showing interest early on. Palesse should at least land at the mid-major level and could go higher depending on how much he grows over the next two years.
David Skogman – 2019 – F/C – Waukesha West
Skogman was slowed in the second half due to an ankle injury, but was really impressive before going down. A big man with a serious upward
trajectory, Skogman had 22 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, and three assists in Tuesday’s loss. Scoring inside and out, Skogman was 9-of-13 shooting. Using an advanced skill set, Skogman can score in a variety of ways. He’s a pick n’ pop shooter who can also hit 3’s off the dribble. He’ll play with his back to the basket and has plenty of primary and secondary moves he feels comfortable with. Skogman can also catch in the high post and shoot over the top or get to the rim. Skogman has high major offers from Rutgers and Texas Tech. If he improves his lateral quickness, strength, and motor on defense, he’ll do just fine at that level.
X-FACTOR
Sam Hytinen – 2021 – G/F – Arrowhead
A good-looking sophomore, Hytinen has a chance to be a real important piece to this team. He’s got the skills to be a third wheel to Gouin and Gilmore as this season goes forward. The lefty is a strong 3-point shooter and hit three triples on Tuesday. Hytinen has good length and can put the ball on the deck a little bit and shoot over the top of defenders. With the amount of attention Gilmore gets and Gouin is sure to generate going forward, Hytinen can take the Warhawks to another level if he can take advantage of the lackadaisical coverage that will come his way.
NOTES
– Senior guard Chris Bready had 14 points (5-12) and six rebounds for Waukesha West.
– Arrowhead also got a double-figure scoring efforts from Cole Kyle (13 points).
