The 6’2″ Bonney is off to a terrific start to the season in leading the Lions to a 4-1 season. After averaging 8.2 points a game as a junior in a supporting role, Bonney has evolved into the go-to player for East and he has more than doubled his scoring output while putting wins on the board.
Bonney would be a very nice prospect for a NAIA program who is looking for a fine all-around backcourt prospect. He showed well at Elite Camps at Missouri Baptist and Columbia College during the summer. He performed well during the summer with the Missouri Impact 17U team and that has carried over into the start of his senior season at East.
Through five games, Bonney is averaging 19 points, 5.2 rebounds and two steals a game while shooting 51 percent from the field. He led East to a third-place finish at the recently held Winfield Tournament. He scored 24 points in a victory over a good Parkway North team in a non-conference game and a game-high 26 points against Warrenton at the Winfield Tournament.
In addition to showcasing his all-around skills as a player, Bonney has also become a team leader, which was something he really wanted to embrace as a senior.
“I really wanted to be more of a leader this year,” he said. “I’m communicating more with my teammates and getting them into the right spot. I just want to make sure that everyone is on the right page.
Even with the early individual success, Bonney is more excited about the early success of his team, which is looking to improve upon last season’s 13-13 record.
“I’ve been very excited about the season,” he said. “I think we have a chance to make a name for ourselves and win some games. Our goal is to win a conference championship and compete for a district championship this year.
