Prospect Update: Trey Shearer (2021)
As a freshman, Montezuma guard Trey Shearer was sensational, as a sophomore he’s been substantially better.
Heading into the Winter Break, the 5-foot-10 sophomore is averaging 23 points, 5.5 assists and 3.4 steals per game. It’s the assists numbers, up from 3.9 per game last season, that Shearer says he’s worked to improve the most. Also his off-hand and finishing at the rim.
“I think one of the biggest things I’ve improved is getting my left hand better, my left hand and getting to the basket and finishing and handling the ball has gotten a lot better,” said Shearer.
“And another thing is seeing the floor, our offense likes to get up and down, so I think me seeing the floor better is a big part of us being successful.”
As Shearer thrives, so does his team. Montezuma is currently 10-0, and one of the the hottest teams in Iowa heading into the Winter Break. It’s the sophomore guard’s confidence that has been the biggest difference-maker.
“Last year as a freshman, the bigger varsity stage got to me and I was a little hesitant, but I think I was too good to be so hesitant. I’ve really stepped us this year and been a passer and scorer when my team needs it,” said Shearer, who went out of his way to praise his teammates, and credit them for the 10-0 start.
“Hunter Ray is a stud, he’a a really good big. Eddie Burgess flat-out plays great D and rebounds the ball. Nolan Reynolds, Nolan Havran, those guys are hustling machines. I think the group we have is really good and it’s a successful group we have.”
The year ahead will be a critical one for Shearer. He’ll spend his 16U with Martin Brothers, and could have a breakout summer recruitment-wise.
“This summer, I want to be really successful with my Martin Brothers team. We’re going to travel quite a bit and I’m really excited,” said Shearer. “I’m hoping to pick up some good offers, I’d love to pick up some scholarships, that’s a big goal for me.”
