He is a pass-first true point guard who can also knock down outside shots and find creative ways to score the basketball.
After a strong summer competing for the Kansas Cagers, Schwinn says the experience has helped prepare him for his senior season.
“It was a great experience for me,” Schwinn says. “Coach McCoy pushed me to do things in practice that I wasn’t used to and it made me better physically and mentally. The mix of size, speed, and athleticism of the guys I played against this summer prepared me for this high school season.”
Schwinn says he spent much of the offseason focused on improving his defense.
“(It) is probably the part of my game that needs the most improvement,” Schwinn said. “I’m only 5’8″ and really have to move my feet and have active hands in order to make a difference on the defensive end of the floor. I also worked on quickening my release and shooting in general to become a constant threat offensively.”
Schwinn says expectations at Maur Hill – Mount Academy are high this season. The team returns three starters, including Jack Caudle (junior), Abe Siebenmorgen (junior), and Schwinn and features seven seniors and 10-12 guys who play on varsity.
“We’re deep with size, speed, and athleticism,” Schwinn said. “We hope to make another trip to the State Tournament this year.”
Schwinn says MoKan Elite’s Drew Molitoris has had the biggest impact on his basketball career to date.
“He was my coach for my first two years of high school at Immaculata,” Schwinn said. “He helped form a lot of the habits I have today and gave me an extreme amount of confidence. He was guy that anyone would love to play for and stressed the importance of being a good person in the world. Coach Molitoris was an amazing coach and an even better person. I still talk to him regularly.”
A fan of basketball at all levels, Schwinn says he enjoys watching other guards and tries to take elements of their game and make it his own.
“I enjoy watching how they can control the game and see things that average players don’t see,” he says. “Often times I get on YouTube and watch older players as well. Some of my favorites are Steph Curry, Kyrie Irving, Trae Young, Steve Nash, Allen Iverson, John Stockton, Pete Maravich, and Jacob Pullen.”
Schwinn says he has drawn some interest from college coaches, including Benedictine College, the University of Saint Mary, and some DIII schools.
“I plan to be playing somewhere next fall, most likely a smaller college not too far from home,” Schwinn said.
