At 6’7, Griffey has the size to bang in the post, get on the boards and can also step out and knock down 3-pointers. He is averaging 9.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game this season.
He says he spent the offseason playing grassroots basketball, focused on improving his outside shot and playing tougher defense.
“It was a good experience (playing in the offseason), it’s completely different then high school basketball better competition different environments, but it’s helped me a lot to becoming a better player and preparing me for the high school season,” Griffey said.
Lafayette is off to a slow start, but Griffey says the Lancers have the tools to put together a strong season.
“I think we are gonna be a good team this year we have great chemistry we share the ball well and we all can shoot,” he says.
Griffey says his older brother, former University of Illinois’ standout Tyler Griffey, has had the biggest impact on his basketball career to date.
“My brother I’ve looked up to him since I was a kid, watching him become the player that he was I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Griffey said.
A fan of former Wisconsin standout Frank Kaminski, Griffey says he hopes to take some of the low post moves from the NBA forward’s game and make them his own.
“I loved watching him play at Wisconsin he’s a beast in the post,’ Griffey said. “I got my hook shot from him.”
