The athletic 6-foot-3, 175-pound guard from McMinnville got the opportunity to work out and play with James Johnson’s Hoop Salem program and take his game to higher levels. College programs took notice to Arzner’s play this summer and will be monitoring him this season with the Grizzlies.
Hoop Salem sent out several teams on the AAU circuit and since he’s a good student, Arzner ran with the High Academic squad. “I loved James as a coach – he really got me out there to people,” Arzner said. “I felt like I felt into it well and I really liked all the players on the team. I felt like my game got stronger and I became a better teammate. I’ve been working on my vertical and my shooting.”
Arzner noted that he grew up playing as a post but since transitioning to the point, has been working hard on tuning his ball-handling. The senior is a raw athlete – he can easily jump and dunk with two hands and he gets up and down the floor effortlessly. His combination of athleticism and skills drew some recruiting attention over the summer and Arzner names Whitman, Pacific Lutheran, Eastern Oregon, and Linn-Benton as some of the programs who have been in contact.
“Smaller schools, Division III, NAIA, and community college – that’s kind of where I want to go,” Arzner said of his recruiting interest. “I’m looking for a fast-paced type of play, where they run and push the ball up the court.”
Arzner has made a visit to Pacific Lutheran and he noted that he enjoyed his trip, that the coaches and players were nice and that the atmosphere was cool. He’s hoping to make some other visits to Whitman and Eastern Oregon, but for now is focused on this upcoming season.
“It’s going to be fun – we’ve got a strong group of seniors,” Arzner said. “I just want to win league.”
Arzner currently ranks as the #44 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2019 rankings.
