As mentioned in Daniel Mbangu’s prospect spotlight, Fairfax is made up of a plethora of juniors. Along with Mbangu is the 6-foot guard, Josh Abtew.
Abtew plays more of the point guard position and does a great job distributing the ball, especially on the break. Additionally, he has a smooth jump shot that he uses well beyond the 3-point arc.
With the multitude of scorers on the Fairfax roster, Abtew’s stats may not stand out on the score sheet every night, but he plays a pivotal role. Abtew is a stellar on-ball defender that tallies multiple steals most times out and always looks ahead to find the open man down the court.

Fairfax is 8-1 on the year and Abtew recognized the selflessness his team possesses has helped propel them to their success.
“I think it’s gotten off to a really good start – like one of the best starts we’ve had in recent years,” Abtew said. “I think what makes us special is that not one person tries to take over for us, it’s like a team effort and we have different role guys who step up every game that contribute to what we need to win that game.”
When it comes to the recruiting scene, Abtew hasn’t received any serious interest from college programs, but his coaches have been hearing from a couple D-III coaches. Finishing his junior season strong and following it up with a good AAU spring/summer will be important.
As the season moves on, Abtew is looking to add a mid-range game into his arsenal of weapons.
“My mid-range game is one thing I’d like to improve,” Abtew said. “I feel like I can score at the basket and my 3-point shot is one of the biggest parts of my game, but if I can keep working on my mid-range game, I can score at all levels.”
