Prospect Spotlight: Jermaine Phillips (2019)
Jermaine Phillips made the switch from Northeast to Lakewood for his senior season.
Averaging 9.8 PPG for the 6-1 Spartans, the 2019 guard has been a reliable weapon offensively alongside fellow senior guard Jalen White, 2021 guard Oteman Delancey and 2020 forward Jamille Reynolds.
Phillips says he loves the environment and feels his team is always ready to play.
A big rivalry game awaits on Friday night when Lakewood travels to Gibbs.
The 6’0″, 180-pound Phillips says his recruitment has picked up since arriving at Lakewood this summer. However, no offers have come just yet.
“My junior season at northeast was a very testimonial year as a team we worked hard at everything we did every day, we stepped in the gym, as it didn’t end how we wanted too I feel it was a decent year, however,” Phillips told Prep Hoops. “I continued to work on my game every day and I’ve seen major improvements on my jump shot, explosiveness, and ability to get to the rack. I definitely gained confidence in my jump shot and being a floor general and a leader for my team.”
He has big plans for his senior year with his new team.
“This season at Lakewood with me being under coach Lawrence and coach White on top of the hard work I put in myself, I feel my game has definitely expanded,” Phillips said. “With what they have shown me to make my overall game as a basketball player it has gone up a notch in all categories on both sides of the ball.”
During the summer, Phillips played for both Game Elite and Team 727. It was his first year with Game Elite, a program he played with during the live periods.
In terms of his biggest strengths, he pointed to his shot beyond the arc and his overall basketball IQ. Phillips says he wants to continue to improve his vertical and ability to be dominant on both ends of the floor.
He’s certainly playing more freely and less worried on a team full of fast and strong athletes. Phillips has been a welcomed addition to this new look Lakewood team. He rarely comes off the court and his shooting touch has gotten his side going quite a bit this season. The change should spark his energy and his recruitment as the season goes on.
