The lanky 6-foot-6, 175-pound senior is capable of doing damange both inside and out for the Pirates and he did so last weekend at the Westside Winter Jam. Howard is hopeful that his play will lead to some college opportunities as he keeps on plugging away game after game.
For Dayton, Howard is the team’s top inside threat but he’s versatile enough to face the basket and either hit the perimeter jumper or attack the basket with his length. While the Pirates lost in the semi-finals against Columbia Christian – who ended up winning it all – the experience going up against a talent like Ben Gregg was something Howard appreciated.
“That was a really big challenge going up against him as he’s a really great player,” Howard said. “I felt like I held my ground against him but we couldn’t stop him in the paint. But I I feel like I’m getting more confident and getting better every game.”
The Pirates bounced back and won the third place game in the tournament. Howard prepared for this season by spending a lot of time in the weight room and playing AAU basketball with Team Jones. Dayton head coach Ron Hop noted that some junior colleges have been in contact with his star forward but the senior is hoping for more attention as the season goes along.
“I’m hoping to get some offers,” Howard said. “I’m wide open right now.”
As Howard competes for Dayton, the goal is to showcase not only his skill but his intangibles as well. “I want to be confident, have a good attitude and go out there pour my heart on the court,” Howard said. “With my game, I want to show my shooting ability, my mid-range, my ability to go one-on-one with my defender.”
