But every so often a big man will come along that commands attention and in the Class of 2020, Jasper Reinalda is that man. The rapid-developing 7-foot-3, 265-pound post from Corvallis recently showed off his potential at the Capitol City Classic and if his play there is any preview, he’s on his way to being a dominant paint presence.
“I’m pretty happy with the progression so far,” Reinalda said. “I had a foot injury so I really didn’t get back into it until a week before we opened (the season) but I feel good about it. It’s all been about getting better every day.”
They say it takes some time for big men to develop and that certainly is the case with Reinalda. But the progression is indeed moving along quite well. Earlier on the in the summer while playing with Team Fly 16U, Reinalda was a bit lumbering up and down the court but at the Capitol City Classic he moved quite well for his size. Offensively, he posted up strong and when he received entry passes high, he did the fundamental thing of keeping the ball high when turning around and shooting over his defender with a very soft touch.
Over four games at the Capitol City Classic, Reinalda averaged 12.8 points and was solid on the boards and defense, effectively using his size advantage. It’s still a bit early but he’s started to attract some recruiting attention from college programs.
“I’ve been hearing from a couple of schools here and there, up and down the West Coast,” Reinalda said. “I’m a West Coast guy so I want to stay here and I also want to get a good education. I also want a school that uses their bigs.”
Reinalda is wide open when it comes to his recruitment. While Corvallis only went 1-3 at the tournament, the competition was fierce and he feels they made some strides going into the rest of the season. “I’m really excited – I think it’s going to be great with this team,” Reinalda said. “I think we’re going to have a lot of fun and I think we’re going to have a lot of success.”
Reinalda currently ranks as the #39 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2020 rankings.
