Armed with a long, rangy frame, Stubbs brings a unique and diverse skill set to the floor for a big man. He can dominate in the paint, handle the ball a little and can stretch the floor with his outside shooting. He has an array of quick shot floaters and runners in the lane that he uses to get flip the ball in the basket quickly before defenders can react.
He spent the offseason competing for the MoKan Select 16U squad and says the experience helped his game grow over the summer.
“It was a great experience, got a lot of great coaching and played with talented players,” Stubbs said. “It helped me learn a lot about the game. I’ve really worked to improve my on-ball defense and my overall athleticism. It has payed off so far.”
While Liberty has a new look squad after losing several talented seniors from a Final Four team a year ago, the Blue Jays don’t appear to have slowed down much despite Stubbs being its only returning full time varsity player as Liberty has started 3-2.
“Our high school team is completely new besides me being the only returner, we have a lot of young talent. We’ve started off a solid 3-2 and look to build off that. Lots of potential.”
A fan of LeBron Hames, Stubbs said his dad has had the biggest influence on his basketball career to date.
“He coached a lot of my youth teams and has taught me so much about the game,” Stubbs said. “He is a big reason for my love of basketball.”
Stubbs says he hasn’t heard from many college programs just yet, but that is likely to change in the near future.
“I have have been invited to a couple of camps at Truman and Emporia state, had some contact with William Jewell, and I have also had Culver Stockton text me before,” he said. “ I’ve been starting to look into the recruiting process more because playing in college would be a dream come true.”
