Prospect Spotlight: Dominick Denny (2020)
2020 guard Dominick Denny has been a sparkplug for North Broward Prep.
The 5’10”, 140-pounder has no offers or interest yet but he’s really come into his own this season.
He said his 10th grade year was good for his confidence, scoring ability and off ball movement.
“I was playing the two-guard (shooting guard) so I had to adjust to not bringing the ball up the court and running the top of the offense,” Denny told Prep Hoops. “Once we started playing games, I started using a lot of off-ball screens, fading to corners, attacking from the wing and overall I just got the chance to really work on my scoring as a whole.
I think playing that two-guard really helped me to be able to not just be a passer but to really get my own buckets and force people to have to guard me. Which then opens the floor for my teammates and creates a ton of open shots for them.”
Denny says he believes his game has improved over the last few years and he’s gotten better at control the pace and know when to go full speed and attack or bring it out and set up a play.
“I have the utmost confidence in my abilities and truly believe I can be and should be noticed as one of the top guards in the county,” he said.
Denny spent this summer playing up with the 17U South Florida Elite squad, a program he’s been with since 8th grade.
“They have always been very supportive of me and helped me through these last few years. Coach Pino (my first coach) was the person that got me into North Broward,” he said. “But last year I got the chance to really prove even though I was shorter than the seven footers, that I still have the heart speed and mental capacity to play with taller players. Overall, I had a very successful travel season and I look forward to playing again with them this year.”
He pointed to his height, being from a small city like Coral Springs as two reasons why he has no attention from colleges yet. Denny says he deserves a chance to play Division I basketball.
“I’m prepared to one day wake everyone up and show them what they were always missing out on,” Denny said.
As for his biggest strengths, Denny alluded to his ballhandling, shooting and control of the tempo.
He says he wants to improve his on-ball defense and his distance on long balls.
Denny opened the season with 20 and 24 points in back to back wins over Palmer Trinity and Southwest Florida Christian. Look for the junior to continue his development. If he can get stronger and more mature as an attacker, he’ll be on his way.
