A 6’1 guard, Owens is the player opposing teams put on their scouting report as the “shooter” and he helps space the floor and get his teammates open.
“I’m not out there to be flashy or fancy, but to simply get a win,” he says.
Owens didn’t play with an AAU team during the summer as he spent the offseason focused on football.
“However I got in the gym with my teammates whenever I had time,” he said. “Football prepared me in a different way than basketball ever could. It helped me become more physical.
“I’ve improved finding/creating space to get open shots and using less dribbles to score.”
Owens is one of eight seniors at Park Hill South who has helped the Panthers to a 3-0 start with wins over Blue Springs South, Central and Lawrence.
“We’re old, (we have) eight matured seniors with quick guards who run the floor effectively and forwards who can block shots and finish at the rim,” Owen said. “We have a lot of fun playing with one another.”
Owens says Park Hill South assistant coach Boo Richardson has had the biggest impact on his basketball career to date.
“Richardson, he’s been my guy since the seventh grade,” Owen said. “Boo always has my back and taught me how to appreciate the game of basketball.”
Owen said he is a fan of Timberwolves’ guard Derrick Rose and his willingness to stick with it after a history of injuries.
“The guy could of given up on his career so many times, but he continued on because of his love for the game,” Owen said. “I respect that more than anything.”
