Prospect Spotlight: Bryce Phelps (2021)
An up-and-coming young guard in Iowa, Bryce Phelps is emerging as one of the state’s most productive sophomores, and has his team riding high in the early goings of the season.
The Cyclones are 5-1 as they head into their game tonight with South Hardin. Phelps, a 6-foot-1 guard, is averaging 14.2 points, 7.5 assists, 4.0 steals and 4.8 rebounds per game.
“I’m a court-general with the ability to knock down shots. My passing puts me above the normal player along with my defense, I’m able to create steals for fast breaks,” said Phelps.
The 5-1 start has been nice, it’s the best start for the Cyclones since 2011, and Phelps and Co. plan to keep that winning constant.
“We’re looking to continue our success as a team. And my role is just to be the leader and point guard for our team.”
Phelps mentioned he has a goal of to swipe 100 steals this season, he wants to break the all-time school record. He’s got some other stuff in mind, too.
“I want to average 15-plus points for my team this season,” said Phelps. “And team-wise, we want to compete for our conference title. We haven’t won it in a long time and our conference is very competitive, so to win it would be huge for motivation in the postseason.”
As good as Phelps has been this season on the hardwood, he says baseball is actually his better sport. As a freshman last summer, he batted a whopping .463 for the Cyclones.
“I am definitely more of a baseball guy, and basketball has always been the second sport for me,” said Phelps. “I want to pursue baseball for my future because it was the first sport I played when I was little, and I’ve fell in love with the game.”
