One of the best players still available in the 2019 class is Maury guard, Bryan Phillips. The 5’10 bulky, guard who also plays football, is a nightmare for most to guard. But despite his “bully” like size, has always had a chip on his shoulder, and looked for his respect on the court, something he has received since his coming out party. The senior has played on the Commodores varsity squad all four years of his career. Phillips is currently leading his Commodores to an 11-0 record, and the top seed in the Hampton Roads area.
Phillips has seen both the highs of the Commodores throughout his career, as well as the lows, and being in this position, after close wins against a solid Churchland squad, and a young, developing Norview squad, heading into the winter break undefeated has not came easy. When asked on how it feels to be undefeated, Phillips feels as though this is what is meant to be, “I feel like we are just doing the things we are supposed to, I’m not really excited because things are supposed to be this way.” Many preseason polls throughout the Hampton Roads area did not have the Commodores ranked as high as they may have liked, in particular, Phillips, but he has used it as motivation so far. “I felt disrespected at first, but now I feel as though people realize we should’ve been ranked higher than what we were.” This “chip” is the catalyst of what pushes Phillips to perform the way he does. One game that is a true testament of this is a last season matchup against eventual 3A State Champions, John Marshall, a squad who suffered it’s only in state loss to Maury, in a game where Phillips led his Commodores with 27 points, and really made a name for himself.
Since that game, and last season as a whole, he has developed and improved aspects of his game. “I’ve been working on my mid-range jumper, and free throws, I’m hitting more free throws.” As for his goals for the rest of the season, it’s simple for Phillips, “my goal is to be the best me, a leader for my teammates, and most importantly, win a ring, that’s the only option.”
With a player like this, who has showed his loyalty and commitment to a team for the past four years, there must be a reason why right? It is, when asked why Maury, “my coach stays on me, he brings out the best in me every time I step in between those lines, everything else is on me.”
As for recruitment, things are looking good for the senior guard. Although he does not want to speak on his recruitment at this time, Phillips hold several Division I offers, and has begin to gain the attention of Division I JUCOs.
College coaches looking for a leader, a player who is not scared to step up and take charge, Phillips is that kid, and he also has a message for coaches too, “I was a born winner. I will do anything for my team to help US get a victory, I’m a dog.
