Inside Beuter gymnasium where the Knights play their games there is a hallway lined with pictures of standout players for the boys and girls programs over the years. Sophomore guard Ben Johnson is hoping to have his picture on that wall soon. Ben describes himself as “A good shooter with a high IQ who tries to make the players around him better.” The 6’3″ shooter acknowledges plenty of room to improve his game, “I think I need to improve everywhere. I’m always trying to make myself better.” But he is a playmaker with the ball in his hands and one of the most exciting kids to watch in Kentucky’s 2021 class. Ben identified his strength as “Trying to make the right play exploiting what the defense gives me.” When Johnson is at his best, he is making everyone around him better.
Only a Sophomore, Ben Johnson has been thrust into a leadership role. As Lexington Catholic’s best player and leading scorer, Ben is off to a solid start for the Knights, averaging 15 points and 4 rebounds per game and hit a game winning three against Dunbar a couple of weeks back. Johnson identified his goal for the season as, “To help my teammates become better basketball players.” He also intends to keep the school’s high standards intact for his team. “My goal for my team this season is to help Catholic to a 43rd district title and an 11th region title. That is always the goal for Catholic.” Ben’s dad is a legend at Centre College and his older brothers Tanner (Bryant University) and Luke (Loyola-Maryland) are both playing Division I basketball this year. I asked Ben if he feels any pressure with his family legacy on the basketball court. He told me, “I’m always competing with my brothers but I just want to play anywhere at the next level.” I don’t think there is any question that Ben Johnson will play at the next level. He’s already got interest from several schools at various levels but right now his focus is on turning around the rough start for Lexington Catholic and getting the Knights back on track to competing for a regional championship.
