Washington-Lee shooting guard, Alex Simmons has always been known for his good on-ball defense, but this year, in his senior campaign, he has transitioned to a role that requires him to stand out on the offensive end as well.
Simmons, who stands just above 6-feet, is crafty when making a move to the hoop. His quick first step allows him to blow past defenders and find a high-quality shot in the paint. This part of his game compliments all of the 3-point shooters around him.
“I would say, for me personally, that’s (driving to the basket) my better quality,” Simmons said. “I’m pretty good at getting to the basket and finding shots for my teammates and myself.
“I would say I excel more in transition.”
That he does.
It is also to note that Simmons is a strong facilitator as well, and looks to get his teammates involved. In general, the Washington-Lee guards get the ball to the basket fast, as they like to run the floor.

The Generals are 5-6 but started the season with a lot of injuries up and down the roster. Heading into the New Year, they will look to solidify their rotation more and make a push toward the postseason.
“I think we haven’t really been healthy to the fullest extent all year,” Simmons said. We’ve been able to work out a bunch of different lineups – kind of see which guys are able to produce at the varsity level because we have about three or four returning players, so we are a fairly young team.
“We are just trying to get the handle of things and trying to get into a groove before conference play starts.”
