Prospect Spoltight: Gavin Kies (2019)
When we watched Gavin Kies play last spring and summer with Iowa Pump N Run, it was easy to predict he’d have breakout senior season.
The 6-foot-4 guard is doing just that right now with Burlington, Notre Dame.
It’s his size and ability to score in a multitude of ways that has Kies flying high, and his Nikes 6-2 heading into Winter Break.
“My strengths are being able to stretch out tho the 3-point line with my size, and just handling the ball for how big I am; I’m the primary ball-handler for our team pretty much,” said Kies. “And then getting other guys buckets, being able to get them open shots, pick and roll and just dishing it to them.”
As a junior with Notre Dame, Kies averaged 9.5 points, 3.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game. This season, he’s averaging 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 7.2 rebounds.
“Last year I was a starter and I’d bring the ball up, but we had other guys who were primary scorers,” he said. “This year, I need to get 15 or 20 (points) each night, and get our other guys open shots.”
It’s been Iowa Wesleyan, Coe, Monmouth (IL) and William Penn that have been primarily reaching out to Kies. There’s one in particular he’s been especially fond of.
“I really like Coe College a lot, I went and visited there last month. They have a really nice facility and I like the coach a lot and they have a really good atmosphere there,” said Kies.
“I’m just going to try and wait until after the season (before I make a college decision), just to see what kind of offers I can get. I’m going to just wait and see, I’m not trying to decide right away.”
