Continue ReadingTacoma is home to some of the best guards in the state of Washington. Most recently, Tacoma has produced guys like David Crisp, Malachai Flynn, Ahmaad Rorie and David Jenkins. Every season it seems like a new crop of guys come and dominate the scene. With the talent pool being so deep, it is common that some are overlooked. This seems to be the case with Lakes High School senior guard, Daeshawn Wayne.
Wayne is a 5’10 point guard who can score the ball with the best of them and is a fierce competitor. Over the course of his career, Wayne has scored 1000 career points and still has almost a full season left to play. As a sophomore, he earned 3A Pierce Conference honorable mention averaging over 15 points per game and earned 2nd team all league last season while averaging 18points per game and 2.5 steals. This season Daeshawn takes on the role of senior leader, as he is one of three seniors on the team; and the biggest contributor. The Lancers have an impressive young crop of players from the 2021 class. And as expected, they will need time to grow and mature as they look to Daeshawn to lead them.
When asked what was the goal for this season, Wayne was clear. “We want to go to the (Tacoma) Dome. But in order to get there, first we have to put ourselves in position by winning league”
Daeshawn Wayne is a three sport star at Lakes. Lettering in football, basketball and track. His superb athletic ability makes him a dynamic player on both the field and the court. Aside from his athleticism, his heart and toughness is a major part of his success. Wayne is being recruited by Georgetown, Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Brown for football. His preparation in the classroom makes him a rare prospect.
His determination in the classroom is a product of his parents instilling the importance of school from a young age. “They have always been on me about school and how important it is. So after a while, I just put it on myself to get the grades.” Said Wayne. Currently, Daeshawn has a 3.96 GPA and is in his second year of running start. He will have earned his associates degree at the end of this school year.
Even though he has had more success on the basketball court, his recruitment for hoops isn’t as fruitful as he would like. Wayne has been a model of consistency throughout his high school career as an athlete, as well as a student. His skills, athleticism, leadership and his dedication to the classroom make him a valuable member on any team. Its only a matter of time until his recruitment starts to roll.
