Whitaker received 6,189 votes on the poll, good for 50.33% of the total vote. He scored 27 points and dished out 8 assists vs. Sullivan and the following game he scored 32 points along with 10 rebounds vs. Cloverdale.
Whitaker, among others, have been key players in the resurgence of Greencastle this year. Greencastle has started out 7-1 with some big wins over Danville and Sullivan, wins that signal the Tigers Cubs are legit. They have four sophomores who start, so this could be the beginning of a three year run. Whitaker is having a stellar year so far averaging a team high 19.0 points a game, 8.5 rebounds per game, and 4.8 assists per game.
A year after averaging 9.9 points per game, Whitaker has taken his game to the next level. He credits that next step to all of the work that he put in during the offseason.
“I really worked hard on all parts of my game this summer and fall and I feel like it has paid off,” Whitaker said. “I have increased my points scored, rebounding, and assists from last year.”
Going forward, Whitaker is going to be a huge contributor from the point guard spot. He dictates the offense well and they are in good hands with Whitaker at the helm. Even though he is rounding his game into form, he still has a lot to work on.
“I am working on becoming a more consistent three point shooter to go along with my ability to get to the rim and create opportunities for my teammates,” Whitaker said.
Whitaker says that the goals for the team this year are to win county, conference, and a sectional championship. They are well suited to be able to win one this year, as well as the next few years with all of the talent that they have on the team. Whitaker loves the fact that the team plays so well together and he thinks that will allow them to reach their goals this year.
