Pentagon Hoop City Classic Saturday Recap
Saturday was the one and only day that the Hoop City Classic was in Sioux Falls. It proved to have a lot of talent, competitive games and a couple celebrities in attendance.
Mike Miller, who the Hoop City Classic was formally named before accepting a coaching job at Memphis, was in attendance for the majority of the games on Saturday. Bill Self, Kansas head coach, was also in attendance.
We go through and recap some of the afternoon games that took place on Saturday.
Sioux Falls Christian 77 vs. Breckenridge (Minn.) 48
The Chargers continue to display that they don’t have one single guy that score the majority of the points. Seven different players scored at least seven points throughout the game. They once again had a balanced offense and solid shooting performance that led to a 77-48 win.
Zach Witte scored 15 points and Mitchell Goodbary chipped in with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists for the Chargers.
The Chargers dished out 24 assists and also had a 46-20 tilt for points in the paint.
Breckenridge ranked No. 8 in Minnesota’s Class 2A, could not get anything to fall throughout the whole game shooting 33 percent from the floor. Even their star forward, Noah Christensen, couldn’t get anything to go as he had only eight points.
Hunter Feigum led the Cowboys with 10 points and Michael Randall finished with eight points as well.
Findlay Prep (Nev.) 77 vs. Sioux Falls O’Gorman 60
The Knights jumped out to a quick 10-4 start after a hot start from deep. Akoi Akoi had 11 points in the first seven minutes.
But then Findlay Prep went on a quick 12-2 run shortly after that to take a five-point lead and never trailed again winning 77-60.
P.J. Fuller scored 29 points and teammate Blaise Beauchamp scored 24 points for the Pilots. Every time O’Gorman would mount a comeback those two would go on a quick run of their own to bring it back to a double-digit lead.
Fuller also recorded nine rebounds and six assists, while Beauchamp grabbed eight rebounds.
The stat O’Gorman might be the most proud of was they outrebounded Findlay Prep 53-36. Akoi finished with a double-double 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Mount Marty commit Luke Ronsiek recorded 10 points and pulled in eight rebounds.
Brandon Valley 74 vs. Rochester John Marshall (Minn.) 62
In a game where five-star prospect Matthew Hurt had 36 and showed out for Self who was in attendance as well as Miller, the Lynx of Brandon Valley got the victory, 74-62.
A day after he scored his 3,000th point Hurt tried to bring his team back from a hot shooting Brandon Valley team who had a solid performance from Carter Olthoff. He had 15 in the first 12 minutes of the game.
Olthoff would finish with 22 points and seven rebounds. Jackson Hilton contributed 16 points, while Evan Talcott had 15 points as well. They had 35 rebounds, 17 offensive, to outrebound John Marshall 35-27.
Hurt also had five rebounds and three blocks. Lincoln Meister was the next highest scorer for John Marshall with 10 points.
Yankton 71 vs. DeLaSalle (Minn.) 65
In one of the most competitive games of the day, Yankton upset Minnesota powerhouse DeLaSalle in OT, 71-65.
Matthew Mors fought foul trouble throughout the entire game, picking up his second and sitting the remaining six minutes of the first half. He would pick up his fourth foul at the nine-minute mark and sat until the 4-minute mark. He finished the rest of the half and played the whole OT as well. For DeLaSalle they were without injured star forward Jamison Battle.
It was a 3-pointer from the Islanders’ Semaj Hart with 1:27 remaining in the game that tied the game at 60 a-piece and forced overtime. In OT Cole Sawatzke hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession and Yankton never looked back.
Tyrell Terry did Tyrell Terry things and led all scorers with 33 points, he also had four assists and three steals.
Mors finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Rex Ryken and Cooper Cornemann pitched in with 16 and 14 respectively.
La Lumiere (Ind.) 78 vs. Tea Area 64
The Titans held with the No. 1 team in the nation but ultimately fell 78-64 to La Lumiere at the Hoop City Classic.
The Titans outscored the Lakers 38-33 in the second half and brought the lead from 30 to the final deficit of 14. They were outscored by just two points (58-56) in the final three quarters.
Wendell Green led the Lakers with 23 points while recording seven rebounds. Star forward Isaiah Stewart chipped in with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.
For the Titans Noah Freidel finished with 33 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Justin Hohn and Kade Stearns pitched in with 14 and seven points.
