Notable young guards: 6A
The holiday season is upon us. In the spirit of giving, these young guards from the 6A conference have given their teams hope for the future, and are also producing on the court now.
Here are four sophomore/freshman guards that are standing out in the Arizona 6A conference this year:
Patrick Herrera – Skyline
Herrera is one of the state’s leading scorers, regardless of class or position. He does, however, lead the sophomore class in points and rebounds. His ability to shoot, dribble, pass and finish near the hoop are at a high level already, and he is a clear leader for the Coyotes, who hope to make a run at the 6A title with a very young squad.
Dominic Capriotti – Skyline
Speaking of Coyote young guards, Capriotti is arguably one of the best three-point shooters in the state, as just a freshman. The son of a coach, it is clear he has great matureness on the court beyond his age. He is the beneficiary of having other really talented players on the court with him, who draw defenders to them and allow him space to shoot from the corners.
Carson Kelly – Chandler
Kelly is the only starter on the Wolves team who is not a senior. He played incredibly well this offseason and in summer ball and definitely earned this spot. His ability score from all parts of the floor has been crucial for a Chandler team that depends on its guards to score a lot in the half-court. He also defends opposing guards very well, using his quick feet to get in the way.
Jason Kimbrough – Mountain Pointe
The Pride have a real chance to compete for the state title again this year, thanks to several big-name seniors and juniors hungry for success. However, one player coach Kirk Fauske has lauded is Kimbrough. He does not have to do a majority of the ball-handling, leaving much of that to Khalid Price. However, he has worked really hard on his shot, and makes a lot of big jumpers when needed, including some huge ones in a win against Pinnacle.
