Weems is different. And not just in his incredible ability to play the game of basketball. Weems does things his own way, and it always seems to be the right decision. From choosing to attend and play basketball at a smaller community high school in New Haven to his recent, and somewhat surprising commitment, to DePaul, Weems is his own man with his own agenda.
New Haven has certainly turned out to be the right place for Weems to see success and develop his game. He has taken great pride in representing the community he plays for. In short, its been a perfect match. He has a great relationship with Coach France, and together, they’ve built a monster. In 2016-2017, Weems helped lead New Haven to its first state championship. New Haven won a Macomb County record 52 straight games. In 2017-2018, Weems led his team to a 20-0 regular season and New Haven’s second trip to the state final 4.
Romeo Weems has been active with USA Basketball. He was a member of the 2017 U16 National Team that held a 5-0 record and won a World Cup Gold Medal. Weems was also on the U17 team that won a 2018 World Cup Gold Medal. He started all 7 games, averaging 8.6ppg and 8.1rpg.
Weems is certainly a much heralded player. In his junior season, he averaged 26.3ppg, 10.8rpg, 5.3apg, and 4.8spg. Weems was the 2017 and 2018 AP Class B Player of the Year. In 2018 he was named to the USA Today All-Michigan Team. Weems was also a member of the 2018 Prep Hoops All-State Dream Team.
Romeo Weems has a skill set that is best described as ‘special’. He is a natural leader who is willing and able to do whatever it takes to win. Weems is always ready to take a charge or dive for a loose ball. He simply makes the hustle plays that winning teams need.
Weems is one of the most versatile prospects in the country. He can play guard virtually every position. Weems has developed the ability to step behind the arc and hit a triple. He can grab a defensive rebound and push the ball in transition, leading the break like a point guard, stepping out on the wing and hitting a jumper, or finishing at the rim with authority. Weems has a college ready physique and is already prepared for the physicality of NCAA basketball. With his ability to put the ball on the floor and drive to the bucket, he’s a true multi level scorer. Weems may be at his best when slashing and cutting to the basket. He’s an extremely intelligent player who knows when to create his own look at the hoop.
The state of Michigan should enjoy watching Romeo Weems this season. He will be a finalist for the Mr. Basketball Award, and may just put himself in the same breath as some of the state’s all-time greats.
