Continue ReadingIn an effort to do something different than I have in the past few years, I headed out to Chatham, VA to attend the 1st Annual Military Circuit. This first session is at Hargrave, with sessions to come at Fork Union and Massanutten as well this year. There were six teams competing, including the three above along with Mount Zion Prep (MD), Spire Institute Prep (OH), and the Andrew Osbourn International Sports Academy (ISA). Here’s a look at some standouts from day two, all seven of them being different from the guys we highlighted on day one.
Timon Jones | 5’11” PG | FUMA
Jones was steady both days at the PG spot for FUMA, running the team well and getting them into their sets regularly. He took good care of the basketball and made plays for others, as he had 10 assists to just five turnovers in both days. He showed the ability to make tough shots off the bounce throughout his career, and now he’s showing that he’s able to run a team with a rigorous and complex system.
Caleb Matthews | 6’3” WG | Mt. Zion Prep
The NJIT commit came to play in Mt. Zion’s win over FUMA on Saturday night. The shooter from Delaware was much more aggressive than he was on Friday night, looking for his shot early but not forcing things. He has a quick release and good form, and when he’s looking for his shot he can be a backbreaker from deep. He finished with 12 points on 4-for-7 from deep.
Mahamadou Diawara | 6’9” PF | Massanutten
On a team that is loaded with scoring threats in the backcourt, Diawara did a great job both days making the most of his scoring opportunities and dominating on the glass regularly. He did a great job helping to hold Spire to just one shot on Saturday night, and he finished with 10 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting from the field and pulled in 14 rebounds. He’s one of the best available big men in the state.
Brandon Suggs | 6’6” WF | Massanutten
Suggs size on the wing and ability to create his own shot in the half court on the offensive end. He can guard multiple positions, helps well on the glass from the wing and he’s a capable and willing passer who makes the right play most of the time. He has three level scoring ability, can shoot the three off the catch and uses his size well to finish in the paint. He finished with an impressive stat line of 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Aundre Polk | 6’10” PF | Spire
After a somewhat lackluster performance in their loss to FUMA on Friday night, Polk showed a lot of potential in their loss to Massanutten. The 6’10” big has good mobility, gets off his feet well to protect the rim and he can finish above the rim. He’s a streaky shooter from deep who should improve over time, and his size and athleticism is intriguing moving forward. He finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds in the loss.
Jayson Robinson | 6’1” CG | Hargrave
Robinson isn’t a key guy for Hargrave, but one thing he showed in the minutes he got in both games is that he can score the basketball and get hot quickly. He scored 10 points in about five minutes of garbage time against Mt. Zion on Friday night, and he scored 17 points in their blowout win over ISA on Saturday. He shoots the basketball with confidence from deep, he can handle in transition and create his own shot and knows how to play the game. He’s a gem in a Hargrave system that always prepares kids for college well.
Chris Wriedt | 6’9” PF | Hargrave
Hargrave has a stacked backcourt, as they start three guys that are 6’7” plus. Still, Wreidt showed that he’s a potential division one big off the bench with his ability to score with his back to the basket. A wide bodied post guy, he showed good touch with both hands, he passed well out of the post and played with good energy. He finished with 12 points and six rebounds in their win over ISA.
Tyler Nelson | 6’5” WF | Hargrave
The Navy commit showed great flashes that should make him a big impact in the Patriot League moving forward. At 6’5”, he has a strong and explosive frame, showing it with some big time throw downs in transition. He seems like a competitor, and is a guy who has gotten much better according to his coaches. With his size, athleticism and motor, he could turn out to be a steal for Navy at the next level. He finished with 8 points and five rebounds in limited minutes.
