Marshall has a young team, including a freshman and sophomore in the starting lineup, but they turn to Deaver for guidance. Thus far, he has embraced it, and has recognized that it may take some time before the youth is consistent at the varsity level.
Take a look at Prep Hoops recruiting report on Deaver here.
“Last year I could definitely rely on them (previous seniors) to run the offense and be patient because we all knew what we were supposed to do from the very start, and we already had plenty of experience,” Deaver said. “It was a lot more of just focus on what I’m doing and work on my own game last year.
“This year, I have to make sure everyone is on the same page, everyone’s staying patient, because it’s a completely different game on the varsity level for some of these new guys. Then just bringing everyone together. It’s a lot harder to then balance my own game, focusing on what I need to do, and being responsible for where everyone else is.
“It’s an awesome new role, and I’m loving it so far.”
Even though college is right around the corner, Deaver is focused on the season at hand. He mentioned that he is working on filling more of a rebounding role and even set a goal for 15 rebounds per game.
The rising senior has yet to choose a school for next year, but has his eyes sent on three schools, per our recent conversation: Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT), Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and the Merchant Marine Academy.
We will continue to keep a close eye on Deaver’s recruiting as the season moves on.
