Marcus Smith Recruiting Update (2019)
Oak Ridge High School is certain to produce another college basketball player this season.
Tennessee Wesleyan University evaluated Oak Ridge point guard Marcus Smith Friday, December 7th.
Marcus Smith aims to continue the Oak Ridge tradition after this his senior season. Smith, ranked #86 in the Class of 2019 rankings, routinely scores over 20 points each night. After his older brother Levert graduated, Marcus is tasked with scoring as much as possible. The makeup of the team remains guard-heavy. Marcus is the pinnacle of that attacking spear.
Tradition
Marcus Smith will merely be another Oak Ridge Wildcat graduate playing or having played in college.
E.J. Bush and Geevantay Gee compete with Bryan College. Tajion Jones suits up for UNC-Asheville. ORHS ’74 graduate Otis Howard starred for Austin Peay and then survived a 12-year pro career in Europe, predominately Spain and Italy.
Where will Marcus Smith play next season?
“I really like Coach (Ray) Stone and the rest of the coaching staff,” remarked Marcus Smith Friday after the game. “They have a great program.”

Ray Stone ascended to Tennessee Wesleyan Head Coach in April after serving under Mike Poe.
Maryville College and Bryan College are also communicating with the talented scorer. Through eight games, Maryville’s Scots are 4-4.
The success of Smith this year was predictable. He possessed better than average quickness for years heading into his senior season. Smith’s bounce and quick shot release also served as strong indicators. His biggest weakness last year was shot selection. His athleticism and hops enabled him to get off shots almost every possession. Unfortunately, he elected to settle for more difficult shots than he needed to.
This year Smith is making difficult shots more often.
Smith put up 34 points against Karns. Better yet he filled the stat sheet that night with eight assists and six rebounds too.
Marcus Smith actually opened up his season with 21 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds against Meigs County.
Keep an eye on Marcus Smith in the coming weeks as the college coaches around the state intend to do.
