Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several players who stood out throughout the event.
Isaiah Esquibel, 6’2, G, 2021, Topeka
Esquibel is a smooth guard with an all-around skill set. He has good length for a 6’2 wing player and largely lets the game come to him at the offensive end of the court. He can handle the ball, has a feel for finishing in transition and shows a smooth looking shooting stroke whether it’s from beyond the 3-point arc or in the mid-range game. He finished with seven points in Topeka’s win over Blue Valley West on Saturday, all coming during a key stretch in the third quarter.
Mike Harrison, 6’1, G, 2022, Raytown South
Harrison is a young guard who got the start for the Cardinals and showed a smooth offensive game and a lot of poise on the court for a youngster. He got on the boards at both ends of the floor and showed the ability to run the break and finish in transition.
Nathan Johnson, 6’2, F/G, 2021, Washington
Johnson didn’t score a lot on Saturday, but his activity in the paint and on the backend of Washington’s press defense was a big key to their comeback against Liberty. He is an undersized, but athletic forward who works hard at both ends of the floor.
Scott Riddle, 6’1, G, 2021, Blue Valley West
Riddle is a guard who is mostly flying under the radar in Kansas hoops, but he impressed with his shooting ability, basketball IQ and competitiveness on Saturday. He knocked down four 3-pointers in the Jaguars’ loss to Topeka, including a key four-point play in the third quarter. He finished with 18 points to lead BVW.
