Jack Tosh Tournament: Monday Standouts
We closed out the holiday tournament week with a three game slate at the Jack Tosh Classic. The 32 team field finished its event out with the consolation championship, 3rd place, and title games. Here were the standout performers on the day.
PG Nate Shockey (York – 2020)
Shockey is a tough and gritty floor general who hit several big shots for the Dukes in their championship game victory. The 2020 guard is a sound perimeter shooter that is lethal off the catch. Underrated athlete that is shifty ball handler. Sound passer as a drive and kick distributor. Thought he did an excellent job defensively limiting one of DGS best scorers. Shockey had 17 points.
PF Sam Walsh (York – 2019)
Walsh opened our eyes earlier in the week and closed the Tosh Tournament out with a strong performance in the title game. The 6’5” four man is a classic old school back to the basket big man who has tremendous skill and footwork. He isn’t the most athletic, but is crafty and precise with his moves. Quality area rebounder. Walsh went for 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.
PG Nick Kosich (York – 2019)
Kosich is a low key point guard that just goes about his business getting the job done. Thicker build who has a good feel for the game. Connected on a three of the catch and had a layup. Was a sound passer on quick dishes inside. He scored 10 points.
SG Erik Cohn (York – 2019)
Cohn is a floor stretching wing. He is out there to shoot the basketball. Did just that as well as scoring on a runner. Cohn went for 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
PG Timmeon Gamble (Downers Grove South – 2019)
Gamble started off the game scorching the nets. Got to the rim for an and-1, got a layup off a steal, and drilled a wing. The 5’10” point guard quieted down and didn’t do much after that. He had 11 points and 3 dimes on the night.
SG Wes Hooker (Downers Grove South – 2019)
Hooker was the best player on the floor in the championship game. The 6’2” senior is a name that has been on our radar for a long time. Big time athlete with springy legs. That was shown off with a big dunk early in the contest. Quick off the ground which allows him to finish on dump off passes as well as be an effective rebounder. The jump shot has consistently improved over his ca-reer which was shown here drilling threes and 15-footers. Hooker scored 20 points (8-8 FG) and 7 rebounds.
SG Justin Eagins (Downers Grove South – 2019)
Eagins was probably the top prospect in the championship game. He did what he is best at which is letting it fly from three. The lefty has deep range on his shot as he buried multiple triples from way far out. At times that can be to his detriment as he settles far too much for that shot. The sniper had 12 points (4-12 3 PT).
SG Jeremiah Williams (St. Laurence – 2020)
It was a slow start for Williams, but he picked it up as the game went along. The 6’5” wing has long arms and plus athleticism. Struggled early to find the shooting touch, but got it going as the game went along drilling a pair of wing threes and using his floater game from the mid-range in. Underrated part of his repertoire is his passing. Crisp distributor that finds his teammates. Defensively he can check multiple wing spots effectively. Williams had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
PG Trey Davis (St. Laurence – 2020)
Davis was a major stock riser throughout the week at Jack Tosh. The combo guard is a lefty that proved he can really shoot the rock from deep. Did it again on Monday connecting on an array of them. Quick stroke with elevation off the floor. Potential as a defender guarding other point guards. Davis had 17 points.
SF Lance Jackson (St. Laurence – 2019)
Jackson is a tough 6’3” glue guy that can shoot it from three when left open. That is what he did against Lyons draining a trio of triples. Physical body allows him to do some damage in the paint as well. Went for 16 points.
PG Nolan Niego (Lyons – 2019)
Niego is one of the more undervalued lead guards on the board in the senior class. High IQ guard with a crisp all-around game. Plus shooter on one dribble pull ups and threes. When his feet are set and he gets a clean look they mostly go down. Sound passer who makes quality decisions with the ball. He had 17 points.
G Tyrese Shines (Lyons – 2019)
Shines is a D2 commit to Minnesota-Crookston. The senior has size and strength at the lead guard spot. Can slide over and play some two when needed as well. Streaky shooter, but did drain one from deep to close out the first quarter. Like how Shines uses his physical advantage against smaller guards taking them to the post for scores. Runner game is on point for Shines. He scored 15 points.
SG Austin Freeman (St. Patrick’s – 2019)
Freeman is a slick handling 6’3” senior combo guard that plays mostly with the ball in his hands. Long arms and a slender build. He is at his best being slippery through traffic and getting to the hoop. Elite foul shooter as he hardly missed all tournament. Scores off a live dribble with and-1s and runners. Did hit one three. Solid passer finding his teammates on flares several times for threes. Freeman finished with 26 points.
G Dominic Galati (St. Patrick’s – 2020)
Galati is only listed at 5’10”, but this combo guard can really shoot the rock. He was most effective moving without the ball to get open on flares where he drilled threes from the wings. Quick release from three. He had 14 points.
C Joe Fanning (St. Patrick’s – 2020)
Fanning might not be the most projectable big man at his size and girth, but he played a major factor in this game especially in the third quarter. The wide bodied and undersized five man used body positioning to seal his man off for scores as well as using a right handed hook shot. Quality area rebounder who can score on second chance opportunities. Went for 10 points and 9 rebounds.
SG Atharva Atreya (Sandburg – 2020)
Projectable 6’3” two guard with length and a smooth game. At times he drifts in and out of the contest, but there is no doubt the skill is there. Played both on and off the ball. Sound perimeter shooter connecting on a mid-range jumper and a three in the first half. Continued in the second half with a few feathery moves on his way to 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 dimes.
SF Marvin Agwomah (Sandburg – 2019)
This rock solid 6’3” wing is more of a power player that does his damage in the paint. Strong in the paint getting on the offensive glass and finishing well. He had 12 points. His energy inside was a big reason Sandburg won.
SG Kevin Agwomah (Sandburg – 2019)
Kevin is more of a perimeter threat. Connected on a trio of threes. The lefty has a smooth stroke and quality strength. Went for 15 points including a huge three late along with 9 boards.
