It should probably come as no surprise that our top-ranked team in Class 4A makes this list, but only that they didn’t make the list sooner. The Lancers are now 7-0 to start their season; wins over Cedar Rapids Prairie and Bettendorf have been the eye-openers, but they’ve methodically gone through the first part of their schedule, winning those seven games by an average of 13 points. Senior point guard Cortaviaus Seales has been, of course, sensational, he’s averaging 15.8 points per game. Juniors Ty Anderson (a Northern Iowa commit) and Sam Kilburg are both averaging double-figures in points.
North Linn
The Jake Hilmer-led Lynx made the jump from 1A to 2A this season, and we were curious to see how things worked out. They’ve played an all 1A schedule so far this season, and are up to the same ‘ol tricks. Through seven games, they Lynx are unbeaten, they’re winning by an average of 50 points per game. They’re the highest scoring team in the state, averaging 92.6 points per game. Hilmer is a cheat code, he’s going for 24.1 points, 11.2 assists and 5.3 steals per game. David Seber, Trevor Boge, Austin Miller, and freshman Austin Hilmer are all scoring in double-figures.
Ames
Freshman Tamin Lispey (Iowa State offer) and senior Japannah Kellogg are shining bright, and Ames is continuing to impress at the 4A ranks through the early part of the season. The Little Cyclones have lost just once in seven games, and that was a one-point defeat at the hands of a good Johnston team. Since that loss, the Little Cyclones have thumped an up-and-coming Des Moines Lincoln squad, throttled Ankeny Centennial, and just last night got their crown jewel win, a 68-60 win over previously unbeaten Ankeny. Kellogg, a Wisconsin-Green Bay recruit, is averaging 16.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Lispey has been as good as advertised, he’s going for 16.1 points and a team-best 3.7 assists per game.
Clear Lake
Now eight games into their season, the Lions have yet to lose. This week, the 3A squad has added two more impressive wins; Monday they beat Class 4A opponent Mason City, 63-58, and on Tuesday beat Algona by 14. The perfect start comes as a bit of a surprise. Last season they started the season 5-3, and that was with superstar guard Zach Lester, who averaged 30.2 points per game as a senior. This season it’s Tate Storbeck and Drew Enke leading the way, the combo is averaging a combined 27.2 points per game. It’s been freshman Carson Toebe that’s been the biggest surprise, he’s averaging 11.0 points, 5.9 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game.
Montezuma
Trey Shearer, a budding sophomore star, went off for 48 points last night in a win over Keota. He’s averaging 24.8 points per game, and is a big reason why the Braves have raced out to an 8-0 start. Senior big-man Hunter Ray has also been exceptional, he’s averaging 19.3 points, 3.6 blocks and 7.2 rebounds per game. The Braves’ season started with a 36-point win over Lynnville-Sully, that’s still the Hawks’ only loss of the season; that rematch will be Jan. 15, we fully expect Montezuma — our 3rd-ranked 1A team — to be 12-0 heading into that one.
