Georgia vs Alabama Braggin Rights Event Preview
Atlanta, Georgia – The 1st Annual Georgia verse Alabama Braggin Rights Event hosted by Chris Williams is set to tip off this weekend in Huntsville, Alabama at Columbia High School. Georgia will be well represented in this event of course with programs like Pebblebrook, Holy Innocents School, Morgan County, Southwest Dekalb, and Georgia’s class 7A defending champions Meadowcreek. The Alabama programs representing will be Sidney Lanier, Wenonah, the host school Columbia, Jemison, and back-to-back class 7A champions in Mountain Brook. Below I have previewed each matchup and what we could possibly expected this weekend in Alabama.
Wenonah (AL) vs Morgan County – 2pm
To get things started at the first annual Georgia against Alabama showcase, the Dragons of Wenonah (AL) will face off against Morgan County High School out of Madison, Georgia. Both programs are coming off final four appearances in their respective classes in their state. Wenonah (AL), who finished last season 28-7 overall, made it to Alabama’s class 5A final four and has returned almost all of thier roster from last season. As for Morgan County, the Bulldogs finished with one of the best records in the state of Georgia last season after finishing with an overall 29-2 record and making it to Georiga’s class 3A final four. Morgan County has also returned most of their roster from last year’s final four team and this should play out as a solid and even matchup to begin the event.
Columbia (AL) vs Holy Innocents School – 3:30pm
The next game will feature some young athletes and some of the best young athletes at that. The host school Columbia will face Holy Innocents School out of the Atlanta, Georgia area. Columbia finished last season with an overall record 23-14 in Alabama’s class 6A and where their season was cut short after losing to Hazel Green (AL) in the regional semis. They have lost a few key seniors from last season’s squad so this team is expected to have some young talent on display. If you have not heard by now, Holy Innocents School holds a couple of Georgia’s top sophomores in SG Garrison Powell and SG Chance Moore. The Golden Bears finished last season with an overall 18-10 record and losing in Georgia’s private A class final four and return most of their roster and transfer Chance Moore to the squad this season.
Sidney Lanier (AL) vs Southwest Dekalb – 5:00pm
The third matchup in the Georgia verse Alabama showcase features two programs who have greatly improved from a year ago. The Sidney Lanier (AL) Poets finished last season with an overall 13-16 record. Coming into this event the Poets have not lost a game thus far and are sitting at a 9-0 record. However, before their matchup with Southwest Dekalb, they will be facing Brewbaker Tech on Friday Dec. 7th so their record may change. Southwest Dekalb will not be at full strength this weekend as key players like 2020 W Eugene Brown III and their key transfers will be sitting this one out. That leaves emerging prospect 2020 PG KD Johnson and one of Georgia’s best available seniors 2019 G/F James Glisson III to lead their Southwest Dekalb squad to a victory and to represent the peach state.
Jemison (AL) vs Pebblebrook – 6:30pm
Before the battle of champions collide, Moutain Brook (AL) verse Meadowcreek, Jemison (AL) out of Huntsville, Alabama will take on one of Georgia’s most consistent basketball programs in Pebblebrook High School. The Falcons of Pebblebrook contain some of the best sophomores in the state headlined by W Jamal Clyce, F Tyler Shirley, and PG Danny Stubbs. Their sophomore big three have had a solid season so far for Pebblebrook and will look to impress this weekend in Alabama. Jemison (AL), the alum of Alabama guard John Petty, has had an up and down season thus far but will be looking to get better and put their talents on display this weekend.
Mountain Brook (AL) vs Meadowcreek – 8:00pm
To end on what is expected to be a great event, the clash of champions will face off in Mountain Brook (AL) against Meadowcreek High School. The Mountain Brook Spartans have won Alabama’s highest classification, class 7A, title in back-to-back seasons and will be looking to repeat once again this year. 2019 F Trenton Watford is without question one of the big names and players to watch in this event. The 6-foot-9 forward will be going against one of Georgia’s top defensive teams in Meadowcreek High School who have also captured Georgia’s highest classification, class 7A, title last season. The Mustangs big three this year consist of 2019 PG Jalen Benjamin (UAB), 2019 SG Damian Dunn (Temple), and 2019 SG Jamir Chaplin (South Florida). This matchup, in my opinion, should be a straight defensive game and the first one to 50 points should come out with the win.
