Luke Brown’s Show
Even though he missed a good chunk of the year last season, Luke Brown is making up for lost time in a hurry. The 6’0 guard from Blackford went off last night. But not for 30. Not for 40. He went for 55 points and looks like he has no reason to stop.
Moving Blackford to 5-1, they have been beating up on some lesser teams in their area but hard to knock a guy that dropped 55 points in a game and has been consistently over 30 points with that record. How for real is Luke Brown and Blackford. Well, I think that question has been answered for Luke Brown but Blackford may still have to prove themselves a bit.
Regardless, there might not be another person in the Midwest that is putting up these kind of points and in some of the bigger games later in the year, he could make some real waves. It’s as impressive of a start to a season as we have seen in some time.
Castle’s Marquee Win
Maybe no good 4A team in the state needed a win as much as Castle did last night against Evansville Reitz. Their 66-55 win was key because while they were 4-1, they need to figure out what the rest of this roster has now that some key guys have graduated.
The talent on this roster is deep but it isn’t like Bob Nunge, Isaiah Swope, Brady Hunter, or Louis Brock were big time role players last year. But now they are. This is there time and to get a win over a good team that has the capability of making a deep run in state should be huge for their confidence of a lot of inexperienced guys.
Fishers Wins Mudsock
Now sitting at 4-3, it might be time to say this is the year for Fishers to take off. With close losses to Mt. Vernon-Fortville and Ben Davis, this team could have been really close to 6-1. They weren’t there at the beginning of the year but now, after their Mudsock win over Hamilton Southeastern on Friday, it could be time.
Fishers has yet to beat rival Hamilton Southeastern in each of the last four tries and it wasn’t since 2014-15 that they did just that. They are 2-10 in their last 12 meetings against them. But, with their strong start and win over their rival, this could be a good time for Matt Moore and Fishers to break out.
Quick Hitters:
- Bloomington South is righting the ship well now as they have won three straight after dropping their first two games. Granted, the last three are a bit easier. Now, the real test comes tonight as they take on Floyd Central. Are they back to full strength and can compete or will this team be just a step below the top teams.
- Time for Brownsburg to find out what they are made of. Until this point, they have won all the games that they should win but haven’t beaten a quality opponent after losing to Attucks, La Lumiere, and Lawrence North. Ben Davis comes to town and hopefully coming off a win last night over rival Avon will have them ready to go.
- Fort Wayne Carroll got back on track with a win over Fort Wayne Wayne. Solid opponent and result for Carroll who had dropped games to Concordia, East Noble, and Penn. Now 3-3 on the season with a winnable game against Norwell tonight.
- After a great 4-1 start to the season, Columbus North has now dropped back-to-back games against Fishers and Columbus East. We talked about this pivotal stretch and now we see more about where they stand at 4-3. Solid team but may still have some ups and downs.
- Crown Point knocked off Munster last night 55-51 in overtime. It was a big win for them as they only played one other highly rated team in Penn and got blown out by 20. Munster is now 5-1 but still could be one of the better teams in 4A this year. Should know more after the first of the year.
- Edgewood keeps on trucking as they pick up another win over Indian Creek and move to 6-0. Next two games could give them an 8-0 start heading into their Holiday Tournament.
- Evansville Mater Dei keeps it moving as they beat North Posey last night. They are now 6-1 and has beaten everyone except Reitz and that included Southridge. Watch out, though, the back half of their schedule is brutal with Castle, Heritage Hills, Memorial, Forest Park, Jasper, and Bosse.
- One of the more interesting teams so far is Fort Wayne Concordia who is now 4-1 after a win over Bishop Dwenger, 58-51. They also have beaten Canterbury and Fort Wayne Carroll. Great start for the Cadets.
- Fort Wayne Northrop has another win over a solid program in Fort Wayne South. Now 6-0, they look like a team that is one of the best in the Fort Wayne Area. Will see how good they are state wide with a game tonight against Lawrence North.
- Greencastle has really surprised people to this point as they are now 5-1 with their only loss to South Putnam. They have not only beaten Sullivan last night but also Danville. Great start for the Tiger Cubs.
- Harrison has now won back-to-back games after losing to Lafayette Jeff last week. Now, they dominated McCutcheon 40-26 in a massive program win. They still have enough talent to win some more big games this year.
- Might be time to take Indianapolis Metropolitan for real. They just beat Cardinal Ritter last night and has now won three in a row over Irvington Prep and Park Tudor. They are 3-1 and look like the real deal. Next up, Brebeuf.
- Jeffersonville just gave Silver Creek their first loss of the season. Silver Creek should still be one of the top teams in 3A this year but will need to look into how Jeffersonville got it done to know more about the Dragon’s future.
- Logansport picked up a key win on the season as they knocked off Lafayette Jeff. Now 5-0, Jeff is their first major victory and give some solidification to the talent on roster. A pair of fairly easy games should vault them to 7-0 before the holiday tournaments.
- In back-to-back games, Indianapolis Pike has now beaten Center Grove and Lawrence Central. Hard to tell just how good this team is because they lost to Hamilton Southeastern and Ben Davis the previous two games. Could it just be they are turning a corner. Will need to dig more into this.
- 1A Shoals is starting to make waves as they are now 4-1 and have wins over Borden, North Daviess, Loogootee, and Southridge after last night. Some big wins already this season and could be a sneaky team to watch throughout the year.
- South Bend Adams gave Riley their first loss of the year, 76-70. Huge win for Adams who had a little bit of a tough start with their schedule but pick up a marquee win.
