LA VERNE, CA.—Frank Burlison and the Damien staff did an outstanding job of gathering the best collection of talent in the West for this holiday season. In the previous reports we focused on the standouts. However, these next reports will focus on the stock raisers (Liam Woodrum), sleepers (Evan Oliver), and biggest revelations (Brenton Knapper).
Sedrick Altman (Colony)
2019, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: The athleticism, length, and motor are the most noticeable traits of this young prospect. He’ll fit the mold of “It’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.” He attacks the rim with a vengeance, finishes well above the rim, and he defends/rebounds at a high level. If his jump shot is falling, his stock rises exponentially.
CJ Fisher (Rancho Cucamonga)
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Fisher is a late-blooming 4/3. His skills are raw, but he is a high-level athlete with great feet and ideal length. Due to his quick feet, lateral movement, and bounce, he has the potential to be a high-level multi-positional defender.
Brantley Stevenson (Etiwanda)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Etiwanda struggles at times putting the ball in the hoop, but Stevenson is their most reliable shooter. The crafty scorer with good length does a nice job slithering his way into the lane, has a nice pull-up game, and a feathery touch to the stripe.
Anthony Bell (Chino Hills)
2019, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: While Onyeka Okongwu is the catalyst to the Huskies success, Bell kept the defenses honest with his all-around play. He plays with passion at both ends, has a terrific 1st step, and can score from all three levels.
Jayden Trower (Valencia)
2019, PF, 6-foot-7, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Valencia took home the Gold Division Championship despite Trower not playing due to injury. However, Valencia would have not been in that positon without the stellar play of Trower. The rangy 4-man fills the lane in transition, knocks in elbow jump shots, and can protect the rim. His best basketball is definitely ahead of him.
Robert Whaley (Bountiful/UT)
2021, PF, 6-foot-5, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: Whaley is the son of former NBA player Robert Whaley. The burly 4-man is a load on the block due to his strength, instincts, and bounce. The lefty Whaley has ball skills and knock in the elbow jump shot. A unique prospect.
Liam Woodrum (Anaheim Canyon)
2021, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: The lightening quick Woodrum has a knack of getting in the lane due to his quick feet and speed. His handle is tight, he can go equally well attacking left or right, and knows how to finish in the lane. Once his jump shot becomes a weapon his stock will continue to elevate.
