LA VERNE, CA.—There were a number of highlights from Day 2 at The Classic at Damien including the one-two punch of Ziaire Williams and Julian Rishwain to Ethan Anderson’s scintilating performance against host Damien in the quarter-finals. In between you had Onyeka Okongwu’s masterful performance against Riverside Notre Dame to Jaylen Clark’s dominance against Riverside Poly.
Julian Rishwain (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame)
2019, SG, 6-foot-5, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: While teammate Williams dealed with early foul trouble, Rishwain put together one heck of a game. This Boston College-bound shooter has a feathery touch from deep and a quick release. His ball skills are good enough to create his own shot and he’ll drop a sweet dime now-and-again.
Onyeka Okongwu (Chino Hills)
2019, PF, 6-foot-8, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: Efficient is what best describes “Big O”. The game comes so easy and effortless to him that you sometimes don’t appreciate how dominant he is—and that dominance will place him No. 1 player in the West. Soft shooting touch, impeccable timing, and magnetic hands are just some of the traits that have him in the starting line-up at USC next season and the NBA in due time.
Ziaire Williams (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame)
2020, WF, 6-foot-7, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Despite foul trouble where he sat out at least 1/3 of the game, Williams still managed to drop 35-points and grab 14-rebounds. His clutch play in the 4th quarter included finishes that required a significant amount of dexterity, timely passes, and a number of freethrows.
Evan Mobley (Rancho Christian)
2020, PF/WF, 6-foot-11, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: The No. 1 prospect in the country did a little bit of everything against Santa Margarita. Flushes in traffic, pin-point passing from the post, rim protection, and deep 3-pointer describes what he is capable on a court.
Isaiah Mobley (Rancho Christian)
2019, PF, 6-foot-9, 240 pounds
Joel’s Take: The multi-skilled Mobley affects the game in a variety of ways. His skill and savvy are uncanny as he can score or facilitate at a high level. When he is attacking at the elbow he is tough to deal with his vision and skill.
