LA HABRA, CA.—The drive to Sonora High School in La Habra can be aggravating as you have to navigate (via WAZE) through a plethora of side streets. However, it was well worth the trek because the action was as tantalizing as all those holiday treats—thanks to the epic show put on by national 2020 recruits Ian Martinez and Josh Christopher. At the end of this epic championship game, it would be a game winner put in by DJ Rodman—who by the way had a stellar game himself.
Sam Howlin (La Habra)
2019, C, 6-foot-9, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Howlin, who is headed to Williams Jessup University (NAIA), has a frame (broad shoulders/long arms) that oozes upside along with terrific hands. He does a nice job of sealing on the block and finishing over either shoulder. He shows solid timing at both ends as a rim protector/rebounder and he can finish with the dunk with space.
Kevin White (JSerra)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Every successful team needs a glue-type and White is that guy for JSerra. He came through for his teammates in the areas of rebounding, defending, and clutch baskets. His active hands and instincts kept numerous possessions alive as well.
Michael Ofoegbu (Mayfair)
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Ofoegbu, who will be heading to prep school next season, has the length and bounce to be a college player someday. He is a fluid runner, has solid hands, and can explode to the rim for the finish. He shows great timing as a rebounder and shot blocker, but it’s the development of his ball skills in transition that shows his potential going forward.
Cole Yauney (Troy/Fullerton)
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Good hands, a blue collar mentality describes this future JUCO special. Yauney knows what he is (5/4) and he doesn’t try to do anything he isn’t capable of doing on the court. He rebounds in and out of his area, can finish with either hand, sets solid screens, and shows touch in the paint. l
Liam Woodrum (Canyon/Anaheim)
2021, PG, 5-foot-11, 140 pounds
Joel’s Take: Anaheim Canyon has had some nice guards come through the ranks under Head Coach Nate Harrison—and Woodrum appears to be the next. The true point guard is chock full of moxie, burst, and skill. His 1st step is quick, can finish with either hand in the lane, and he changes speeds with the best of them. He can knock down the 3-point shot, but his game excels in the paint as a finisher and facilitator.
Cameron Dashiell (La Habra)
2019, PG, 6-foot, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Physical point guard, initial burst and speed are high level, gets in lane, finisher through contact, Defensively, he is a ball hawk with active hands, excellent later quickness, high motor. To take his game to a new level, he needs to improve his outside touch to keep defenders honest.
