GARDENA, CA—The Dwan Hurt Holiday Classic had an intriguing set of teams that sparked the interest of fellow colleague Devin Ugland and myself to venture out to Junipero Serra High School. It was a first look at St. John Bosco as well as some under-the-radar talent like King Drew’s senior Billy Clark and Windward’s sophomore Brandon Richard.
Lamaj Lewis (St. John Bosco)
2021, WF, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Lewis has been on the radar since his freshman campaign and he is progressing quite well. The smooth wing-type has an ideal frame with good length and his touch—which extends out to the 3-point line—is feathery. He is a quality athlete and as his 1/2 court mid-range skills and triple threat game emerge, thus his stock will rise.
Brandon Richard (Windward)
2021, PF, 6-foot-6, 200 pounds
Richard has a solid skill set, soft touch, and sound foot work in the postJoel’s Take: Due to his stellar play against Serra, Ricard could have been categorized under any category—but will stick with sleeper because of his upside. The thick 4-man with a soft touch was dominant in the semis due to his fundamentally sound post moves and overall feel for the game. With his frame, length, and footwork he is one of the more intriguing prospects in the So-Cal Class of 2021.
Scotty Washington (St John Bosco)
2021, SG, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Washington fits that prototypical wing-type profile with extreme length, high hips, and budding athleticism. He is still a “diamond in the rough” type at this stage as he shows glimpses of his mass potential. His length allows him to finish over length on the drive and defensively his long arms and quick hands cause deflections. His ball skills are on the come as is his jump shot, but the improvement is evident.
Keith Lacount (King Drew)
2022, PG, 5-foot-5, 140 pounds
Joel’s Take: This quick-on-quick point guard plays with confidence and moxie. He is fast in transition, changes speeds, and his knack for getting in the lane and making plays is impressive.
Dominic Woods (Serra)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Woods didn’t have his jump shot flowing like usual, but the couple he tossed in from deep showed off his lift and quick release. For Woods to take his game to a new level is finding other ways of scoring. Improving his mid-range skills, rebounding, and attacking the rim to get to the free throw line will help his overall game.
