GARDENA, CA—The Dwan Hurt Holiday Classic had an intriguing set of teams that sparked the interest of fellow colleague Devin Ugland and myself to venture out to Junipero Serra High School. It was a first look at St. John Bosco as well as some under-the-radar talent like King Drew’s senior Billy Clark and Windward’s sophomore “Big” Brandon Richard.
Billy Clark (King Drew)
2019, PF, 6-foot-5, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: King Drew as a whole was a major surprise at this event and Clark was just one of the reasons why. The lengthy 4-man has long arms, big hands, and plays with a no nonsense attitude. He is most productive at the elbow where he can knock in the jump shot or attack the rim—which usually finished with an “old school” finger roll.
Kijani Wright (Windward)
2022, PF, 6-foot-8, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: The future is very impressive for this well-built post prospect. He has magnetic hands, a soft shooting touch, and he’s explosive around the basket. While operating on the block he doesn’t force the issue and is an exceptional passer. Defensively, he can defend on the perimeter (slides feet well) or rim protect.
Doctor Bradley (Serra)
2019, WF, 6-foot-6, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: This Cal State Fullerton signee is extremely explosive in the open court. He attacks the rim well and is a willing passer. However, to make an impact for the Titans next season he needs to improve his 1/2 court scoring skills and overall feel for the game.
Cory Curtis Jr. (View Park)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Curtis Jr. will definitely be on the radar this spring and summer for college coaches. He has the rangy frame (long arms) and scoring skills to be a college player. Deep range on his jump shot and improved ball skills are part of the package. Consistency, strength, and making savvy decisons are the next areas to improve upon going forward.
Devin Hogan (King Drew)
2020, PG, 6-foot-1, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: This wiry point guard prospect plays an even keel game, but he’s very productive. Sneaky quick off the bounce and an ability to find the open man are part of his overall game. His middle game was productive as well as he dropped in a few runners in traffic.
