- Westview Only Elite Team?
Early in the year, there were a handful of teams that looked like they were going to be elite and had a chance to be in the mix for the top team in 2A. But now, only really Westview can lay claim to that and there isn’t even an argument. With a 6-0 record, Westview stands alone up top and has a pretty easy path. They will play in the Hall of Fame tournament next weekend but even if they come out of that 0-2, expectations are such that they won’t drop in the rankings. For Westview, their schedule is fair easy with only really East Noble as a game where you would like to see them win. If they get the East Noble game and even go 1-1 in HOF, that should solidify any argument for them.
- Southwestern (Hanover) Legit Now
For Southwestern, they looked like they could be a solid team but like many in 2A, they has a fairly solid schedule but only really against 2A and 1A teams with a couple 4A games thrown in. Most wouldn’t expect them to beat a team like Jeffersonville but that is what they did last week. They also beat Columbus East too. Looking down the road, there isn’t a team they shouldn’t be favored against the rest of the way.
- Handful Of Undefeated Teams Still To Prove Themselves
In 2A, we have a few undefeated teams we still are unsure of at this point including LaVille, Shenandoah, Crawford County, and North Daviess. None of those teams has a particularly hard schedule and only Shenandoah and LaVille have solid wins to this point against Alexandria and Winamac. Here also lies the problem, strength of schedule. LaVille has the toughest of them at #192 but North Daviess is #270, Crawford County #316, and Shenandoah is #350. 192 for LaVille, a 2A is actually pretty good but that is about all you have there. Still, these teams could be good, could be great but hard to know right now.
- Good Surprises
One of the best surprises of the year is the revival of Park Tudor. They are ranked 3rd in Sagarin and have been impressive to start the season. Hard to know exactly how good they would be a year ago when all their talent was underclassmen and their only good incoming senior, Isaiah Moore, transferred out. Now, though, they are moving right along in their rebuild. Also, Tipton can be looked at as a surprise. They return only one starter and now hold wins over Frankton and Western at 7-1. Still something to prove in the back half of their schedule with is considerably harder. Linton-Stockton could also be looked at as a good surprise. They are 5-1 with wins over Paoli, Vincennes Lincoln, and Barr-Reeve. They are legit and a contender for 2A South.
- Bad Surprises
When looking at those that have disappointed to this point, Frankton has to be up there. This was a team we thought could be elite and make a run back to the State Championship. Now, they could and still would be considered a top contender to do so, but not sure they are elite this year. A lot of issues and a couple befuddling losses to Tipton and Lapel. Not bad losses by any stretch but not the kind of losses you would have thought they would have entering the season. Churubusco as well. They are now 3-5 and we thought this could be a really solid team but losses to Columbia City, West Noble, and Prairie Heights is tough. And really, Frankton and Churubusco isn’t too bad of surprises in reality compared to other classes. Pretty solid starts for most teams in 2A.
