SHAWNEE, Kan. — Shawnee Mission South got a game-high 24 points from senior big man Skyler Rhoads and won on Shawnee Mission Northwest’s home court 68-54 on Friday.
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several things that stood out in the contest.
South a senior-laden squad
Shawnee Mission South started five seniors in Jake Potthoff (6’6), Evan Hickmann (6’4), Sam Caldwell (6’1), Kennedy Rater (6’0) and Skyler Rhoads (6’5), then brought another off the bench as 2019 Rio Bingley got a lot of playing time. They have a little bit of everything, including solid guard play, an underrated big man and a skilled wing player who can score in Potthoff, as well as a deep bench.
Freshman shows promise, swagger
Shawnee Mission Northwest 2022 guard Damar’e Smith probably didn’t have his best half on Friday as he missed his first three shots then made a corner 3 while being fouled for a key four-point play to close out the first half. But the 5’10 guard came alive in the second half, knocking down five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points. Smith plays with confidence and swagger
Rhoads a tough match-up inside
Shawnee Mission South 6’5 2019 Skyler Rhoads is a physical wide bodied post player who had a field day in the paint on Friday against the smaller Northwest squad. He had 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half, then added 14 points and five rebounds in the second half and finished with a double-doublle. Rhoads uses his body well to carve out post position, then seals his man and shows soft hands and a soft touch around the basket.
Hickman lights up scoreboard from distance, line
Shawnee Mission South 6’4 2019 wing player Evan Hickman knocked down three 3-pointers in the first half, going 3 for 5 from behind the arc snd scored nine points in the first half, then went 6 for 6 at the free throw line and finished with eight points in the first half and 17 total and added five rebounds. He has good size for a perimeter player at 6’4, and shows nice form and balance and a repeatable shooting stroke from distance.
Talley an all-around performer
Shawnee Mission Northwest wing play Dale Talley III is a talented wing player with good size and length at 6’5 and an all-around skill set. He can handle the ball, get to the basket and is a strong and aggressive rebounder. On Friday, Talley showed the ability to knock down 3-pointers handle the ball and create offense for his team. He made three 3-pointers and finished with 19 points and seven rebounds.
