Here are our five takeaways from the contest:
John Godinez puts on a show
Godinez’s style of play is attractive no matter where he plays. His array of crossovers, hesitation moves and spins make the crowd engaged every time he touches the ball. Last night he didn’t disappoint on his way to a game-high 32 points including seven three’s. He was burying three after three off the dribble. Breaking his man down and pulling up, coming off a ball screen, or shooting after getting his man to jump with a pump fake. Godinez was in “the zone” last night in every aspect. He was also setting teammates up for easy looks by penetrating. Defensively, he was everywhere. Getting his hands on what seemed like every pass that was intended for his man to spark fast breaks.
Gallop and Gross step up for Overlea
The Falcons got solid performances from two of their seniors in Dustin Gallop and Rodney Gross. The two scored 21 and 16 points respectively. Gallop, a 6-foot-1 guard did a great job of attacking the rim off the dribble. When he wasn’t finishing, he was drawing a foul and going to the line. Eight of his 21 points came from the charity stripe. Gross is an undersized pick who thrives off of setting ball screens and rolling for tough buckets. He did this last night and despite being much smaller than the Parkville bigs, finished consistently.
The continued development of Timmy Awani
I remember being in the gym when Awani walked in as a 6-foot-4 freshman. He was extremely long, skinny and didn’t have coordination. I saw him last night for the first time in a long time and he was a different player. Now at a legit 6-foot-6, Awani finishes with soft touch over his shoulder after making a post move on the block and has become a legitimate threat as a shooter when he catches it at the high-post. He did a mixture of both of those things last night on his way to 15 points. He was a force as a shot blocker and rebounder with a major size advantage. He is solidifying himself as a legit Division III prospect.
A game that lasted entirely too long
Six players fouled out of this game. That alone is an indication of how this game went. It wasn’t solely on the refs, a lot had to do with the undisciplined defense. In another breath, a change that I would like to suggest is not having students who don’t know the rules of basketball in charge of the clock. There was at least a dozen issues throughout this game with the time, score and foul count. I can’t blame it on the actual student, it has to be placed on the person making the decision to put them in charge of that job. The clock wasn’t starting when the ball was in play and it would run during free-throws. It was the definition of a mess.
A look ahead for Parkville
The Knights have the size and skill to be a really tough opponent in the county and they’ve prove it thus far. To look ahead, they’ll play their next three games at home against Perry Hall, Hereford and Friends. All three of those games are winnable for this team. If they’re able to come out of that stretch with a 6-1 record, people will start paying more attention. They have five to six legitimate college prospects on their roster at the moment.
