Entering the fourth quarter, Farmington trailed by 11, but used a 12-2 run to open the period to get back in the game. They eventually forced overtime and the Falcons’ stars did the rest. Tariq Humes, Tariq Shepherd and Jaden Akins were outstanding in this one, combining for 75 points in a 90-85 win. For A & T, Cameron McEvans was solid, dropping 26 points. Here are five of my takeaways from this game.
Farmington’s big 3 is a force
As mentioned before, Humes, Shepherd and Akins were incredible throughout this game. Humes had 33 points, Akins added 25 and Shepherd dropped 17. Falcons coach Terrance Porter said he’d put them up against anyone one in the country, and their performance against A&T shows you why. There is no doubt that all three will play at the next level, and coaches need to start getting in touch with these three as fast as they can.
Cameron McEvans is a stud
McEvans was truly a force in this game. He scored 26 points and made some big shots down the stretch, including a step back three pointer that gave the Warriors the lead late in the game. A&T coach Darryle Buchanan called him a special player that energizes not only the team but the crowd as well. He’s an excellent ball handler, but plays off the ball just as well. He’s not as highly ranked as some would think, and I think that needs to change.
Charge changes the game
An unlikely hero emerged in this game during overtime. Farmington’s Sam Zervos didn’t see a single minute of game action until his number was called in overtime, and he immediately made his presence felt by taking a charge. Both coaches said that play was a turning point in the game and allowed Farmington to gain momentum. Porter said he tells his guys to be ready whenever their number is called, and he was happy to see Zervos come off the bench and make a big play for his team.
Turnovers were a problem for both teams
This was a very fast paced game. Both teams were applying full court pressure and that led to a lot of turnovers for both squads. In total, the teams combined for 37 turnovers. Buchanan said he was fine with the pace of the game, but wanted to see his team be a little bit more calm with the ball. At the end of the game, he said they lost their poise and that led to Farmington being able to come back in the game. Going forward, both teams need to take better care of the ball.
Andre Floyd and Bakyne Coly were game changers
McEvans was held in check early on and Floyd was able to give the Warriors a spark off the bench, finishing the game with 17 points and five rebounds. On the other side, Coly was solid for the Falcons, giving them eight points and five rebounds while battling foul trouble throughout the game. Coly did a good job rebounding the basketball and battled down low all night. Floyd was very scrappy throughout, coming away with multiple loose balls and finding holes in the defense. These two guys will be players to watch going forward.
