DeMatha led by 20 at halftime, and the Raiders came back to make it interesting, but ultimately lost by a final score of 83-75. Here we recap this high level contest with five takeaways.
JUSTIN MOORE IS PLAYING LIKE AN ALL-AMERICAN
Justin Moore made a statement early in this game, scoring 12 first quarter points as the Stags opened up a 26-12 lead. Moore, who finished with a quiet 23 points, is playing his best ball at the moment and looks like a safe bet to be an all-met. But will the Villanova commit get the McDAAG nod? Only time will tell.
ISAIAH GROSS IS A DIVISION ONE PLAYER
With his team struggling in the first half, Isaiah Gross kept them in it. He took a charge on Hunter Dickinson within the early stages of the game, but the 7-footer managed to avoid foul trouble. Gross scored 16 of his team’s 28 first half points. Even with his team trailing by 20 points, he stayed positive and encouraged his teammates. Gross hit all his free throw attempts and finished with a game-high 34 points. Coaches question his position as to how it translates to the next level, but no matter where you put him on the floor he will defend, rebound, and produce offensively while bringing the intangibles that coaches look for.
CARSTEN KOGELNIK AN UNSUNG HERO
It seems like every time Carsten Kogelnik receives the ball he’s ready to catch and stick a jumper, or make the right read to assist a teammate. The Brown commit is playing some good ball at the moment, and he deserves some love for it.
EARL TIMBERLAKE TRENDING UP
Earl Timberlake continues to show signs of improvement, specifically with his shooting. Timberlake knocked down a three in the fourth quarter from a spot up situation. If he can do this consistently teams will have to respect it, and DeMatha becomes a bit more dangerous.
ROOSEVELT IS FOR REAL
Cameron Brown, Jaamir Butler, and Kyle Rose combined to score just 5 points in the first half, and the team got off to a sluggish start in general. The Raiders outscored DeMatha by 12 points in the second half, and could’ve easily won the game if they connected on some of the great looks they were getting. Rose and Butler, among with Gross are three of the best unsigned seniors in the state, and freshman Willie Rivera Jr. logged some significant minutes that will be good for his experience moving forward.
