Here are five takeaways from the opening day of action:
Fairfax became even more dangerous with the addition of Keith Dinwiddie
The Lions, led by coach Steve Baik, received an immediate boost to their offense with Dinwiddie becoming eligible post-transfer from Culver City. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard scored 16 points in his first game for Fairfax, starting it off by knocking down his first 3-point shot of the game. Fairfax advanced to the quarterfinals with a 64-53 win over Rancho Verde.
Dinwiddie made his Fairfax debut Wednesday, scoring 16 points.Kendall McHugh stepping up at the right time for Santa Margarita
The Eagles guard only scored seven points in a first-round win over Etiwanda, but it was his game-winning, coast-to-coast layup with 5.3 seconds to go that allowed Santa Margarita advance to the quarterfinals. McHugh, a senior who transferred in from Virginia, also had a big game for the Eagles last week in a win over Archbishop Mitty of San Jose.
Addition of Evan Oliver a big help for Riverside Poly
The Bears went down to the wire with the highly-ranked Braves and pulled out a 75-72 win which was iced by a couple free throws from the junior guard. Oliver finished with a game-high 22 points as Poly advanced to the quarterfinals where it will face Corona Centennial.
Corona Centennial is tough to beat when it hits shots
The Huskies stormed out to the most lopsided win of the day with their 85-38 decision over St Bernard. Corona Centennial has a plethora of guards at its disposal with juniors Jaylen Clark, DJ Davis and Paris Dawson, and if those guys are firing from deep at a consistent clip, Cen10 could make a championship run.
Second Baptist came in unknown, almost put together a statement win
The team out of Houston (TX) had the difficult task of taking on the home team in its tournament opener and nearly pulled off an upset. Senior guard Cameron Cohn did most of the damage for the Eagles, draining eight 3-pointers for 29 points, as they fell to Damien, 78-74.
