Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at ten things that stood out in the contest.
Kansas commit opens with huge first quarter
Blue Valley Northwest 6’6 guard Christian Braun had it all working early, knocking down 3-pointers, throwing down a two handed slam, setting up teammates and capped it all with a halfcourt shot to beat the buzzer at the end of the frame. The Kansas commit finished with 30 easy points despite setting much of the second half in the runaway win. He has a terrific combination of size, athleticism and skill and his game appears to still be growing.
Weaver and underrated guard for Pembroke Hill
Liam Weaver, a 6’1 2021 guard for Pembroke Hill provided much of the offensive punch throughout Tuesday’s contest. He scored six of his team’s eight points in the first quarter, added four more in the second quarter and finished with 17 points. Despite being the focal point of much of the Huskies’ defensive efforts, Weaver showed poise for a youngster and worked hard at both ends of the floor. He has a nice mid-range game and is likely to put together a big season.
Chapman a force in the paint
Blue Valley Northwest features one of the biggest front lines you’ll see in Kansas this year and while other players have gotten more press, 6’7 forward Matt Chapman was the player that had the biggest impact on Tuesday. He went for a double-double on Tuesday stuffing the stat sheet with 10 rebounds and 17 points, many of which were a product of his offensive rebounding.
Raider freshman has good moments
Pembroke Hill 6’4 2022 wing Quinton Conley had some good moments off the bench for the Raiders playing aggressive basketball and attempting to take it at the Huskies. He was mostly met with mixed results, but scored nine points and got to the free throw line. He has the ability to handle the ball and create off the bounce and is a creative playmaker with good size.
Newcomers are difference makers for BV NW
New to the Blue Valley Northwest line-up this season are juniors Markell Hood and Michael Peake, both of whom are difference makers on the basketball court. Hood, a 6’5 wing player, got the start on Tuesday and had a big performance scoring 20 points and showcasing a versatile and well-rounded skill set. Peake is a 6’7 forward with the ability to dominate in the paint or step away from the basket and knock down open shots or put the ball on the floor and drive to the hoop. At 6’7, Peake is among the state’s better prospects in his class.
