We look at five takeaways from the game here:
Borden orchestrates well-rounded performance
Senior point guard Dylin Borden has been a leader for this team all season. The 5-foot-11 point guard played all 32 minutes and was key in being sure the team executed sets in the half court. Doug Scheidt, Annapolis Area’s head coach, does a great job in drawing up out of timeout plays and Borden did a nice job making sure they were run successfully on the floor. Borden also was a factor in the scoring column, scoring a team-high 15 points that included four triples. He drew two key fouls at the end of the game as the shot clock struck zero. These are the type of plays that break the spirit of the opposition in their comeback attempt.
Mitchell Fischer with another big scoring night
Fischer has been the consistent offensive threat for the Dons this year. He had another game with 20+ points as he finished with 24 with the majority coming in the paint. He knocked down two three’s late in the game to keep his team in reach, but was effective throughout getting position on the block and finishing over his left shoulder.
Ritter shows upside
Senior guard Ray Ritter has been catching eyes for Annapolis Area this season. The DeMatha transfer is a great athlete with a quick first step. In this game, he showcased his ability to do a little bit of everything on both ends. The 6-foot-4 guard finished this one with 14 points and converted on all of his four free-throws to ice the game for his team. He connected on two three’s and had a couple of strong takes to the basket where his athleticism came to light. He’ll be one to track as the season continues.
Loyola still finding its place
The Dons have already played 11 games this season. It’s still tough to place exactly where they stand in the conference. Without a doubt, they’re a team that cannot be overlooked. Fischer has cemented himself as the go-to option offensively, but he’s looking for a consistent second scorer and will need one if they plan on competing against the top teams. They’ll face the biggest test yet as they host St. Frances this evening.
Annapolis Area keeps getting hotter
The Eagles have now won five-straight games since suffering their only loss to the season at Pallotti. They defend well and execute effectively in the half court. Coach Scheidt has a senior heavy roster, so experience and leadership isn’t an issue. Prior to the season, no one really knew what to expect from this team, but they’re starting to make a name for themselves and in doing so, expectations will continue to rise.
