Featuring many of the state’s top teams and some top out of state teams, the tournament is always one of the best events of the season. Here’s a look at this year’s field and some of the best players involved.
Wednesday Games:
- Things get underway with a big time match-up of Junior backcourts as Collins and Male go head to head. The Bulldogs duo of Noah Courtney and Tyren Moore will go up against Collins Marcellus Vail and Dayvion McKnight. Moore and Courtney are combining for 34 points per game for Male while the Titans are getting 38 points per game from their Junior guards. Role players could be the difference in this one.
- The second game of the day tips at 6 pm and is a game between two teams favored to get to Rupp Arena in March as LaRue County faces Louisville Trinity. LaRue is off to a 6-0 start and showcasing quality depth. Trinity is 6-0 with 5 blowout wins. LaRue’s Mark Goode is going to be a match-up nightmare for Trinity while no one in LaRue County (the entire county, not just the school) can guard David Johnson. Should be a good game.
- At 730, the state’s two best post players go against each other as Madison Central’s Isaiah Cozart locks horns with Walton-Verona’s Dieonte Miles. Miles and Walton-Verona are off to a 7-0 start while Cozart’s Madison Central squad is off to a slow start. Walton has a really good team and it will be interesting to see how many games they can pull off in this tournament.
- The last game of day on gets underway at 9 pm as Ballard takes on Spencer County. The Bears are young and will be challenged in their opener against the Bruins. Sophomores Jake Whitlock and Sam Conley will get all they can handle from Seniors Alex Holley and Walter Johnson. Ballard is a tough out for anyone but especially for the young Spencer team.
Thursday Games:
- Day two starts with out of town teams Brentwood Academy and South Miami squaring off. Junior Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. stars for Brentwood Academy. Sophomore Arturo Dean of South Miami will go against Fitzgerald.
- The 6 pm game pits Southshore against Evanston Township. Evanston Township is out of Illinois and has played in the KOB before.
- The third game of the night is host Fairdale taking on the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons. Fairdale is rebuilding after graduating a ton. They’re hosting a Madisonville team that brings 6’7 Kenny White and 6’9 Ksuan Casey to Louisville. Casey had a monster game of 26 points and 25 rebounds last week while White holds multiple D1 scholarship offers as a Junior.
- The last game of the opening round is University Heights against Lexington Christian in a rematch from last season’s All A state tournament, won by the Eagles. High scoring UHA is led by Senior KyKy Tandy while LCA is led by new all time leading scorer in school history Kyle Rode. If Rode can get some help, they could slow the game down enough to have a chance to beat the Blazers.
Once we get to Friday, 2 games will be played in each gym at 430, 6, 730 and 9 pm on Friday and Saturday then Sunday’s game times are 3, 430 and 6 with the championship game being played at 730.
