Game 1: South Bend Riley vs. Evansville Harrison – 2:30 PM
Out of the gate, Evansville Harrison looked to put their mark on the game by being as aggressive as possible and catching Riley off guard. They did just that and took a big lead early but Riley was able to stay within striking distance. Then, Blake Wesley and Jalen Jennings took control of the game and got the pace into a workable position. They kept clawing away and kept scoring, eventually overtaking the lead in the second half and then pulling away later. Was a big time effort from Riley coming off a loss to beat Evansville Harrison (IN)
Game MVP:
#10 Blake Wesley – 6’2 SG 2021 – South Bend Riley (IN)
**17 points against Evansville Harrison (IN)**
Blake is a long, rangy guard with a ton of athleticism and skill. He was really aggressive early in the second quarter. Drove well to the rim to his right and finished strong, drawing some and-ones. Pulled up from distance as well and looked solid with it. He’s more effective than we saw him during the summer and finishing better. His biggest knock coming out of July was his finishing ability. Well, he looked a ton better on the day. Can play on the ball a bit, likely more of a wing as he gets older but skilled enough to have that break-you-down game.
Game 2: Lexington Douglas (KY) vs. Castle – 4:00 PM
From the start this one was all Castle. From Alex Hemenway putting in a stellar performance for 21 points to Louis Brock stepping up in new ways. This game was over after the first quarter and Castle just kept extending the lead. Monteavean Ben was really good late in the game, making plays off the bounce but came way too late and wasn’t enough to even make it close. This is win #2 for Castle this weekend as they beat Frederick Douglas (KY), 73-51.
Game MVP:
#12 Alex Hemenway – 6’3 PG 2019 – Castle (IN) [Committed to Clemson]
**21 points against Frederick Douglas (KY)**
Solid game for Hemenway who looked quite a bit better than what we saw last year. Was really good off the catch shooting the ball and didn’t look like he was trying to force anything and playing within the game. Still a guy that can play on the ball in college and will be able to make plays at either guard spot. Attacked the rim quite well, using a little more physical power than finesse.
Game 3: Indianapolis Howe vs. Evansville Memorial – 5:30 PM
This was a game Evansville Memorial will want back as they got out to a great start and had Sam Devault in the lane and creating shots early. But as the game wore on, it was Indianapolis Howe’s guards and shot making ability that took over and got the lead back. Led by Kycia Washington’s 23 points and Creshaun Brown’s perimeter shooting, Howe was well in command by the fourth quarter and into double digits. Memorial made a little run but some key free throws missed in the final minute hurt as they fell to Indianapolis Howe, 72-67.
Game MVP:
Kycia Washington Jr. – 6’0 PG 2019 – Indianapolis Howe (IN)
**23 points against Evansville Memorial (IN)**
This was a solid game for Kycia who put up a ton of points and did most of his work seemingly getting to the free throw line. He was aggressive and tough in the lane. Caused a ton of fouls and racked up some points in the lane. Was a little wild shooting from distance, needs to get his feet and body under control still, rather than kind of taking off balance shots all the time.
Game 4: Gary West vs. Evansville Bosse – 7:00 PM
It was pretty evident early on that Bosse was going to miss Kolten Sanford who broke his foot the previous night. Gary West came out running and applied a lot of pressure early on, turning Bosse over and making them pay for it. They got up early on the backs of Quimari Peterson and Jimmie Washington Jr.. Bosse really struggled to finish at the rim, actually getting a lot of looks in the middle of the game but just couldn’t get much to fall. That was pretty much the story for standout Kiyron Powell who had a ton of great looks but no luck on the night. West proved they could be a tough team to beat after knocking out Bosse, 68-53.
Game MVP:
#24 Jimmie Washington Jr. – 6’7 PF 2019 – Gary West (IN)
**15 points against Evansville Bosse (IN)**
Washington is an intriguing prospect. Lean forward with a good inside out game that can slash and play faced up. He’s got good size at 6’7 and a perimeter jumper that should translate to the next level. However, he was best when looking to put it on the floor and drive. So adept at slashing in and out of defenders and using his agility and athleticism to finish. Made a few really difficult plays where he had to maneuver himself around guys to score. Rebounds the ball pretty well. Only knock was wanted to see him play more above the rim, had a few chances to show out and went a little light. Still, a really interesting guy to track.
Game 5: University Heights (KY) vs. Evansville Reitz – 8:30 PM
All it took was one quarter, the first one, for Xavier commit KyKy Tandy to show out. He put up 18 points in the first quarter alone and hit back-to-back-to-back threes in the span of a minute. Pretty quickly Reitz found themselves playing from behind. Khristian Lander was making some plays but Drew Carlton’s shooting helped to really keep it close, they just couldn’t get over the hump in the final few minutes to mount a full comeback as they fall to University Heights, 86-80.
Game MVP:
#15 KyKy Tandy – 6’1 SG 2019 – University Heights (KY) [Committed to Xavier]
**44 points against Evansville Reitz (IN)**
Tandy is a really high-end scoring guard with a quick trigger, tons of athleticism, and as aggressive as you are going to find. Not overly tall but so good on the wing where he has handles that allow him to move laterally to pull-up and shoot. Can also put it on the floor to drive and did so with some authority at the rim. Good speed in the lane and a body that is physically ready to play high-major ball. Elite shooter than has a high release and a pretty quick trigger and isn’t beholden to being squared up to the rim. Hit three triples in a row at one point on three straight possessions. Could be a big time college scorer.
