Continue ReadingWith the new format to the season, we are looking to do more full on player breakdowns. Those will come on Fridays and Sundays. This version, is our mid-week breakdown with games from Monday through Thursday. This week we watched Bethesda Christian vs. Greenwood Christian and Lawrence North vs. Lawrence Central.
#13 Payton Modlin – 5’10 PG 2019 – Greenwood Christian (IN)
**21 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists against Bethesda Christian (IN)**
Modlin is a tough guard who doesn’t have a ton of height but has plenty of strength and loves to drive to contact and make plays at the rim. Does have a decent jumper but more of a guy that is going to drive and finish using his right hand. Does need a little more touch on the jumper for some long term success but should be a solid offensive lead guard.
#22 Trey Spears – 6’2 SF 2019 – Greenwood Christian (IN)
**6 points against Bethesda Christian (IN)**
Trey is a tall guard who does a little bit of everything. Good rebounder, passer, and can score. Needs to be more assertive to build up statistics but capable of doing enough different skills that he could find more playing time. Good size and body to play the 2/3 for a small school program. Just, has a lot more left to draw out of his game and if he can find it, could draw the attention of colleges more.
#34 Styles McCorkle – 6’4 SF 2021 – Greenwood Christian (IN)
**13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists against Bethesda Christian (IN)**
Styles is a tall wing that can play a little bit inside and out. Thought he did well messing around in the paint and effecting rebounding. Has good length and a body that should grow some more. Jumper was okay, best off the catch. Athletically solid but more up and down rather than laterally. Could be an interesting wing that could grow more into a forward down the road.
#40 Champ McCorkle – 6’5 SF 2020 – Greenwood Christian (IN)
**11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists against Bethesda Christian (IN)**
Champ is a tall forward that can really stretch the floor. More of a 3/4 type that has the ability to shoot pretty well from distance. Thought he was good in the transition game but has some room to grow there. Good release on the jumper, maybe just a little too much wrist making it slightly inconsistent but overall, offensively he’s got some weapons. Stands 6’5 but could get another inch or two.
#14 D’Andre Davis – 6’5 SF 2020 – Lawrence Central (IN) [Committed to Nebraska]
**24 points, 8 rebounds against Lawrence North (IN)**
One of the better game we have seen from D’Andre. Looked great when shooting the ball and was doing it all over the floor. Could really take over stretches of the game. Got into some foul trouble but made his presence felt when he was on the floor. He looks taller and a little more filled out. Using his size and length more, mostly on the defensive end. He just plays like a Big Ten level player now.
#2 P.J. Edwards – 6’4 SF 2020 – Lawrence Central (IN)
**0 points against Lawrence North (IN)**
Edwards is a long, big wing with some handles and scoring ability. Was really good creating off the bounce, showing some athleticism when he did get in the lane. Better as a creator along the perimeter where he can get into a jump shot. Has some decent skill, maybe just finding his way early on but could be a prospect worth watching. Transferred from Illinois this year.
#3 Jake Laravia – 6’7 PF 2019 – Lawrence Central (IN) [Committed to SIU-Edwardsville]
**14 points, 10 rebounds against Lawrence North (IN)**
Really solid game from the SIUE commit. Jake was great in the half court and full court game. Good speed in transition and was able to not only help with defense but finished some against length at the rim. Needs to finish a little more efficiently but not bad. Shot the ball well and showed all of his skill across the board.
#24 Nijel Pack – 6’1 PG 2020 – Lawrence Central (IN)
**19 points against Lawrence North (IN)**
Nijel is a tall guard whose really grown into one of the better floor generals we have seen in a while. So patient under pressure and never seemed to get sped up. Thought he was a little bit better getting in the lane and trying to create. Always good in transition but that dribble-drive ability in the half court was something we wanted to see improve and against LN it did look better. Shoots the ball really well from deep. Could be in line to take a step forward during the high school season.
#33 Wesley Jordan – 6’7 PF 2019 – Lawrence Central (IN)
**15 points, 10 rebounds against Lawrence North (IN)**
This was by far the best game of Jordan’s career since his knee injury. He looked so good, fully healthy and impactful all game long. His mid-range jumper was back and hit a pair of 12′ in the first half. Was active on the boards and was really making his presence felt against LN’s post players. Offense looked confident and he was able to really be a weapon on both ends. Passing is a little questionable at this point but really just nitpicking. Great game from the senior.
#5 Jared Hankins – 6’5 SF 2019 – Lawrence North (IN) [Committed to Indiana State]
**27 points against Lawrence Central (IN)**
When getting Hankins, you can get one of two guys. The normal everyday guy who is solid and gives you a little bit of everything or the big game version where like on Wednesday he goes off and doesn’t hardly miss anything. He’s a guy that can get in a groove like he did on this night and not be squared up, not be even facing the rim to start and still knock everything down. He was locked in and the only thing really stopping him was not getting enough touches and maybe wearing himself out taking, and also making, such tough shots.
#12 Tony Perkins – 6’5 SF 2020 – Lawrence North (IN)
**14 points against Lawrence Central (IN)**
Not a great game from Tony but still pretty solid. He wasn’t getting clean looks all the time and seemed to be having to force shots rather than settle for better looks. Still, got to playing well in some stretches and shot the ball okay. Didn’t get in the lane as much or as well as he usually does, mostly due to LC’s defensive alignment.
