The Wildcats went 2-0 in their showcase matchups vs. Bishop Gorman (NV) and Hillcrest Prep (AZ). They are currently ranked the best team in 6A because of their returning prospects who will play at high major schools in the future. Each prospect displayed to national scouts what they can bring to the table and it is safe to say that they left them with remarkable impressions.
The Seniors
Guyer is led by 6-foot-1 inch Oklahoma bound point guard De’Vion Harmon and 6-foot-8 inch Michigan bound combo forward Jalen Wilson. Both have consistently found ways to put up high numbers in the scoring category while leading their team to victories. This weekend, both talented athletes combined for 35 points on day one and 50 on day two. These type of performances definitely help their case as they are making a late push for a “Burger Boy” slot.
Harmon proved to scouts his effectiveness on both ends of the ball. He was a ballhawk defensively, applying pressure on opposing guards to make them extremely uncomfortable. Offensively, he scored from deep, inside the paint, and at the charity stripe. However, he has settled for the deep ball way more than he did in years past. Harmon looks better when he constantly is going downhill and making the best play for himself or the team. When he plays inside-then-out rather than outside-then-in, he makes opposing teams feel his presence. The four-star guard will be given the keys to lead the Sooners as soon as he arrives on campus. And Harmon has the confidence, the toughness, and the game to be successful in that role.
Wilson (pictured in header) has impressed me with his mid-range and three-point shooting somewhat this season. He will be a reliable spot-up threat who will also put his head down and attack next year in Ann Arbor. The four-star wing is doing a great job playing within the offense and converting on comfortable opportunities. Give credit to John Beilein for recruiting a prospect who is a perfect fit for what they do in the Big Ten.
The Juniors
Jakobe Coles Jakobe Coles 6'7" | PF Guyer | 2020 State #143 Nation TX and Tyler McGhie Tyler McGhie 6'4" | SG Denton Guyer | 2020 State TX really helped themselves this weekend with their play. Coles has somewhat been on the national radar being a three-star prospect. The skilled big has taken advantage of each
McGhieopportunity to play in front of national scouts and his performances are paying off. He has showcased his potential to be a dependable pick-and-pop option at the next level, while also displaying toughness, I.Q., and his incredibly soft touch in the paint. Coles will be a high major target if he continues this high level of play. McGhie proved to the country that he is an elite shooter with decent size. He is bound to connect from long range if you leave him open and he always puts himself in the best position for an open look. The 6-foot-5 guard has done a great job of knocking down open looks off of solid ball movement and Harmon and Wilson’s penetration.
Final Thoughts
The Wildcats have played an extremely tough non-district schedule thus far, which will properly prepare them for district play and playoffs. On paper, they are the favorite to be the last team standing in 6A. However, it will not just be handed to them. Is Guyer tough enough to battle through adversity and close out a nailbiter? Can the Wildcats consistently play together as a team to achieve what should be the common goal? If they can do these things, it is hard to not to pick them as the 6A state favorites.
