The Tommy Thomas Cougar Classic was loaded with talented teams and plenty of college prospects. I was able to check out tournament hosting team Colony High matched up against Wylie High in the semifinals. This game was very up tempo and fast paced from start to finish. Both teams are similar in multiple ways because they both have good pass first point guards and multiple players that will play basketball at the collegiate level. Wylie eventually was too much for the Colony Cougars and ended up beating them 65-54. I was impressed with both squads and think that they both can make the playoffs if they both continue to improve.
Player Recaps
Eli Taylor / 5’9” / PG / Wylie / 2021
Taylor may be small but he definitely plays the game in a big way for his team. Taylor uses a tight handle to get by defenders and find his open players around the court.
Drew Lutcher / 6’6” / SF / Wylie / 2021
Lutcher has a lot of potential to go a long with length and good athleticism. Lutcher has a good looking stroke and can knock down perimeter jumpers.
Bryce Okpoh / 6’7” / PF / Colony / 2019
Okpoh plays hard and rebounds the ball well despite being undersized. Okpoh showed toughness and displayed good athleticism near the rim when he threw down a nice two hand flush. He is an unsigned Senior that recruitment may pick up soon.
Luis Rodriguez / 5’8” / PG / Colony / 2019
Rodriguez tried to do everything in his power to get his team a win vs. Wylie. He facilitated hit shots and defended well despite the loss.
