College Commitment: Alex Boyd (2019 La Salle HS)
This past Saturday will be a day that Alex Boyd won’t soon forget. The solid 6-foot-3 wing earned MVP honors while helping lead La Salle High School to the title of the Les Schwab South Coast Holiday Tournament, and later that evening he got even more good news. Boyd learned that he had been accepted into one of his top college choices, allowing him to make a decision on his basketball future.
“I got accepted to Kenyon tonight, so I’m committed to play there next year,” Boyd said. “I visited over the fall and I loved the environment. It’s one of those places that you don’t find on accident. Everyone there has a purpose, but they also know how to relax and have fun. I also loved the feel of the team and the culture that they had.”
Boyd decided on Kenyon – which is located in Gambier, Ohio, a bit northeast of Columbus – over a bunch of other schools that had shown interest. Helping with the decision was the relationship he had built with the coaching staff, who initially had seen him at some summer showcases at Pomona and Brandeis in Massachusetts.
“They were at both and after Brandeis, they reached out to me,” Boyd said. “They invited me out for a visit and that’s when communication really stepped up. They were genuinely interested in me and they checked in on me occasionally since the visit.”
The fit on the basketball floor was what Boyd had been looking for too. “Their league seems fairly competitive, and I felt like my style of play fit well with theirs when I played an open gym with the guys on the team,” Boyd said. “I’m looking forward to next season. Of course I want to improve overall so that I can be ready to go from my first day there, but I think my shot could use the most work – that and my footspeed and defense.”
Boyd is working on those aspects of his game this season as he helps La Salle continue their winning ways. “Our first game was a little rough, but we bounced back well and got off to a good start,” Boyd said. “Honestly, I think we’re capable of a deep playoff run, if not a run for the ship. I feel like we could give anybody work, especially if we play at our best.”
Boyd currently ranks as the #35 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2019 rankings.
